I spent a lot of time kiting at the
coast last year...
figure I'll do it again this fall,
just wondering if you guys
carry big knives (like from scuba)...
seems like I remember someone
talking about that in the past.

Troll carries one around in case he sees some tasty bloodworms. Useful for garnishes and flossing.
On a more serious note, a couple guys out here carry larger knives. Especially in the off-season. Anyone who has had the experience of trying to get one of those little DaKine hook knives to actually free you from a tangle can attest that it's a tough go. I've seen the larger knives attached to the back of the harness, or on the shoulder of an impact vest. It's probably a good idea if you kite alone, or there are obstructions around.

pack up yer knife
the other day one of our pals broke a string at the kite
he was dangling at the time and came down right on top of him
he flipped and flopped but never indicated he was in trouble
so I went out and chased his board around
but not wanting to approach untill he discharged his kite
which he wasn't doing because the one string had him tightly .
So I figured he was going to swim it in
What he was really doing was slashing his string like a madman
as it became entangled around him.
He was starting to have trouble swimming just as he came ashore .
The universal signal for trouble is hands above head and waving
or in his case one hand because the other was tied up
at the moment
It made the Fish run down and outfit his new knifeless MYSTIC
harness

I bought some from a PARAGLIDER SITE CHEAP a couple of bucks each. one on each side of my harness none in the back.
better to have the piece of mind when tangling in the waves.

I go the other way
I even leave my kite hooked up when in the water and on one string
that way the kite pulls me to shore when it's in a wave
I do what I call the scrotum plane
fast and low (body drag)
kite pulling me in
gotta watch them though they can bust
the last thing I do is release the kite
almost never
there are just too many people on the beach
mine went for miles down the beach on its own ,
fuuuck
a long swim and a longer walk
Willy finally raced down halfway to Bullards and stomped on it
ridiculus 7.5 AR-X on short lines
tacoed, popped open ,tacoed , etc,,,complementory 40' slams

wow....scrotum plane...haha....so true.
Good story.
I once watched Gabe lose a kite over the Sunset dunes on the strip. He pulled the dirtbike off the back of his van....chased it into the surf pines community where it settled by someone's porch. About a mile away.
