I was there and hauled Adam out of the water. He was very polite before the accident and actually asked if I minded if he rode in the flat water Hood River section on the east side of the sandbar where Man and I were riding.

I had just put down my 14m as I was getting pretty over powered, which was actually pretty fun. I was taking off my harness and looked up just in time to see him splash down in the water. Actually didn't look that bad at first cause he made it to the water before any kind of impact. I didn't see the kite leave the beach though.

Shit can go wrong without anything to blame. Glad to hear Adam is going to be okay, he said he had a baby on the way in four weeks.

It was nice to see all of us rally and help him out.
Adam, Please ask for a launch next time. Heal up and lets kite.

Hope I wasn't being to harsh, I hate to see people getting hurt. It just sucks for everyone; both the individual and the KB community.

Sorry to hear about this..
But this is not the first time I've seen people just self launch their kites while people are around. My 2 cents it is the whole new 100% depower thing. People just think, I'll be fine, just let go of the bar. But if your rear bridle is caught on the front of the kite..its not pretty.

In the SBC kiteboard mag, they did a 35MPH tow SLE kite from a truck, and messured the pull. They did not say which brand, but it pulled 95lbs of force..and I imagine, if you had the bar pulled in jsut for a bit with a hot launch or something hooked up wrong things can go bad quickly.

Again, I hope you heal quickly.

Heal fast! Working with any orthopedic surgeons, or is everything still fairly inline?

Off topic: Trevor, I think it's very dangerous that you were pulling Tucker's "Oh Shit" handles at Sauvies, when he wasn't even wearing a harness! Wink

I think that was Phil pulling Tucker's Oh Shit

I was just checking to make sure Kramer's saftey system worked as designed. Very Happy

is that not saftey first? fun second?

To follow up and answer some of the questions that have been asked, I did see an orthopedic surgeon on tuesday, and have scheduled surgery on this coming Monday. The bones were fairly well lined up, but the doctor wants to do surgery to ensure that I will have full range of motion after my recovery. I will have a plate on both the tibia and fibula. Should be 2 weeks in a cast, then at least 6 weeks in some sort of brace that allows movement, but no weight on the leg before then.

I thought that the break was from hitting my shin on a rock, but apparently the direct impact of my heel hitting the wet sand under the water is what caused my leg to explode.

Why did I not wait for a launch? Because I am clearly a macho jackass who had to learn his lesson. I did have the kite in control for a short time before getting thrown. I think the problem was that on the leeward side of the sandbar, the wind close to the ground was substantially weaker than up 20 or 30 feet, and maybe in a slightly different direction. As I was bringing the kite up to neutral it hit a dead spot and drifted just enough so that when it came back up, it was stronger than me, and I was not experienced enough to see the danger in time.

Yes, I have had professional lessons, and several days on the water since then. I think a contributing factor was that I was very anxious to get on the water because it was my first session this season, and I had been trying to break away from home & work duties for several weeks, and my past efforts had been foiled by a lack of wind. I knew better than to let excitement get in the way of safety. You can be sure I'll be preaching that gospel for a long time.

Adam

Welcome to the club. I am just a few weeks ahead of you. Take it easy and catch up on some work or video games or something.

Sorry to hear about that but it will get better.

see you on the water in a few months
