I am used to flying 5th line kites where I would tie my leash to my board and move up the fifth line until I get to my kite for self rescue.

With a SLE kite can you do the same with the leash when it's connected to the Chickenloop, then grab an oh shit handle and move up an outside line or is this a terrible idea? Would it be better to move the leash to the oh shit handle then move up the outside line? I gave up winding up the bar a long time ago.

Andy

Also Best says to deflate the LE which seems silly to me. If I'm stuck in the middle of the Ocean I want my LE inflated.

Hmmm, maybe they mean let a little air out of the LE so its easier to bend? I do that sometimes.

My self rescue method:

1) Grab oh-shit handle or whatever works on your bar to flag the kite.

2) Take off harness, using my leash I hook my harness and board (foot strap) up to oh shit handle.

3) Work my way up to the kite on the same line as stuff is leashed off to.

4) Get to kite, let a little air out of LE if necessary (not too much.) Grab the kite 2nd strut from the tips on one side, then grab the other side using the bridle to do it if necessary.

5) In self rescue mode I like to keep the kite as wide open as possible to catch the most wind so I rescue faster. Grab the first strut up from the tip of the kite on the bottom side and hold the bridle on the top side. You can even hold the back line too to make the kite catch more wind.

6) Attaching your harness and board helps keep your lines straight and lets you worry about self rescuing without holding onto your board, only down side is the board might start to bass plug/augur under water. If this starts happening stop dragging with the kite so you release tension in the line. The board will surface then you can start again. The floating harness will help prevent the board from sinking, also if you attach to a foot strap instead of the handle on the board this helps too.

Your results may vary!
