I have a family gathering on Monday & Tuesday near mouth of Nehalem river right by the south jetty. Going to be in walking distance to beach.

Looks like wind. Is it wingable?

-or-

Should I make the drive to Fort Stevens where I have winged before.
Not a real fan of the shore pound at Manzo.

I am capable winger- can stay on foil for hours and make 99% of foot switches. Familiar with surf from kiting and have winged in waves when I was newbie winger.

Thanks for the insight my coastie friends.

Hein: It has been a while since I've seen you post. Nice to see you on here again.
.
I fail to see your reasoning. . . you don't like the shore pound of Manzo. Why would you think it would be any different a 3 to 5 miles south (depending on where you launch at Manzo) at Nedonna Beach/Manhattan Beach at Rockaway?

From my experience and what I have been told, the wind tends to diminish the farther one gets from the coastal hamlet town of Manzo. That is not to say it doesn't blow at Rockaway and or all the way down past Oceanside/Netarts Bay. I know a few folks that have done the DW'er from Manzo to Rockaway, but the reasons for me not doing it was because of timing and logistics and setting a downwind car all the way down at Rockaway ASWELL as not messing with a river mouth ie outgoing current, potential power issues etc etc. I've done a dw'er all the way down to the north jetty, and that was awesome, but you pay the price walking back up wind on the beach, hard and soft sand, in your wetsuit, and hauling all your gear 3 miles to the day use portion of the State Park, after a 2 1/2 hour sail.

If the wind is strong all the way down and into Rockaway (assuming N, NW wind direction), then there will be no clouds or fog at the river mouth and or fog or clouds on the coastal mountains sitting above Rockaway to the east of Hwy 101. Often times one will see the blue hole from Neahkahnie Mountain (north Manzo) to the north jetty of the Nehalem River, and then the fog south of there.

All that said, I have a few suggestions for you. Try and get down to the beach on Sunday as the forecast looks great everywhere on the northern coast/"Northern Strip".

If you can't do that, then my suggestion is to embrace the shore pound of Manzo; Monday's forecast for Manzo, Winds 10-15 kt. With this forecast, Ft. Stevens will be a nothing-burger. Tuesday looks to be even more anemic for wind everywhere on the "Northern Strip".

Another suggestion, if you're not into shore pound, is to try and find a launch spot more in the bay of Nehalem Bay, close to the mouth where the waters are deep and the wind isn't shadowed. If you can, mess around in the bay, and if you can go out into the ocean. Just be careful as I mentioned before that coastal bays have lots of dangers, and when the sh@t hits the fan, the bay/currents are unforgiving.

The other suggestion I have for you, is to try Lot D/Security Beach/Fort Stevens on the south end of the mouth of the Columbia and ride inside Young's Bay. I believe the wingers call it "little Rufus". Probably because one can park on the beach and the launch is yards away from one's car? Sail into the bay/along the south shoreline to Warrington and back to your launch point. If you do that, Sunday will be your best bet.

Happy 4th!

Do visit NWkite from time to time.

Appreciate the detailed info. Alas we won't be arriving until later Sunday and probably tied up with the family (6 grand-boys!) that day. I'm sure I can time it better some other day when not constrained by other fun.

All the best,
Hein

Here is a simple solution to riding in sizeable surf on the Oregon coast.

Leave your winging gear deflated and packed away in your vehicle and grab your kitesurfing gear, pump up and go have a worry free great time no matter how formidable the shore pound might be. Plus the waves breaking on the outer bars will be kite nirvana where you can rack up a 100 glorious waves in a 2 hour session.

I find it somewhat hilarious living here in Newport and watching the wingers attempts at punching through the waves to then go out and mow the lawn near the shipping lanes and basically never venture into the surf zone where the most excitement is available. Talking with them afterwards most admit they should have dragged out there kiting gear and used the proper tool for riding breaking waves.

The Oregon Coast is not the Gorge and the water terrains are completely different. Foiling is the probably the best tool for the river, and a kite and surfboard is the best tool for the surf zone on the coast.
