hey,
i'm still beg - intermed. I have some challenges staying upwind sometimes, and still rely on a downwind safety net.
It's going to be cooking in portland saturday, so i thought it might be a good time to head out to HR. I'm assuming it's safe to plan on launch at event site and if needed, downwind to the park (on an east wind day). Is that right?
also, i think i saw some big trade deal going on today through this weekend. How crazy will HR be?

It’s unlikely, though not impossible, that there will be East wind strong enough in HR. You’ll most likely need Rooster/Stevenson/Viento. Even if there is enough wind for you to get on foil going with current you’re looking at a very short ride time wise.
Might be fun and where you’re at regardless, but it won’t be like a west wind day at all. |

Go to Dalton Boat launch and setup an upwind car or ride at Rooster Rock. You'll have 3 + miles of downwind glory. |

I could see the Home Valley to Stevenson run enjoying a renaissance.
In the windsurfing days, finding a ride back to Home Valley was no problem.

this is a very good point. i failed to remember that east winds weren't like the westerlies!
on that note, in PDX, has anyone ever winged by the airport? I know I used to kite there with phil, back when he was still around! 
anything to watch out for in the water? seems deep enough if i remember right. forecast looks decent for broughton beach, and it's almost direct east/west. |

At Broughton, I did once find with my feet the whole rear end of something like a basic pickup truck. Spooked me enough to assure I never let myself get dragged out of control.
There is shore lined mil-foil there and a sand bar, but none of that would stop me from the convenience.
I met some of the folks regulars on the north west wind and they were riding 6-7m wings with about 1200 front foil.
Need upwind skills for the east bumpy wind there but that NW steady is good.
Stevenson East first time for me yesterday and it rocked only because upwind isn't an issue anymore for me but during a wreck I watched the shore and believe there is still about 1<2mph current.
Summer is not over! |
