Starting the plunge from kite- and windsurf-foil to try winging and planning to buy a new Slingwing (V3). This year I'm taking a 'hybrid' job in silicon valley with a negotiated 'remote' summer, so will spend spring in SF bay (3rd ave) instead of SPI and then HR.

At 185 lbs I windsurf-foiled with a 4m sail in Hood River and found it large at times (but my 3.5m generally too small due to my poor skill level). People my size seemed to be on 4m wings at LJ/ES, though, with smaller folks on 3.5m. For the lighter summer winds in SF bay I'm thinking 4.5m, but I'll be in the gorge for July and August, so maybe 3.5m at 3rd Ave in spring's stronger winds, which I could then use in HR summertime?

Opinions on wing size from experienced (beginner) wingers? Anyone experienced with the relationship between wave sail size windsurf-foiling vs wing size?

(I'd post also on BAK but they all seem to have migrated to Farcebook).

I'm also 185 and I have 200+ days of winging. I had 4 years experience with kite foiling when I started winging. 10 years kiting and 25 years windsurf.
You don't say how big of a foil you will use.....
4 is too small to learn on.
You'll need a 5 and it needs to be averaging 18. Under 18 don't bother.
Once you acquire skills you can use a 4 in 18 - but not when you're learning.
It's best to learn in mellow conditions - averaging 18-22.
If you're only getting one wing - 5 is the ticket.
If you're getting 2 wings - 4 & 5.
If you want to try winging in light winds (average <=17) then get a 5.5.
Typically a winger will be 1 meter bigger than a windsurf foiler.

Better to be over-powered than under-powered. If you're under powered it sucks.

I have a 2021 4m and 5m Cabrinha Mantis just for you, $700 for both. 4m has been used but still crispy. I think I used the 5m three or four times. You are going to want two wings and as you get better the 4 is going to be your best friend.

Ldhr knows his stuff and his recommendations the best.

Awesome, thanks, and good point Laird. I'm currently using the Cabrinha Varial setup and have medium and large front wings. My board is a SIC Merlin crossover which I know will end up too big for winging when I get better, but I also wanted something I could potentially do downwind SUP foil on, and since I already have a garage full of old wave sails it's been fun to windsurf-foil on too. (Also TJ may be selling me on the new Takuma foil setup for prone or SUP since the Varial Large is likely too small and inefficient to paddle/pump, but I haven't tried yet).

It seems used options abound. I'll research the Mantis; that sounds like a decent price.

You can expect 3rd ave to average about ~20mph. I think a 4m is a good call.

Does any know anything about Ocean Rodeo wings . Any good?
I ride O.R. kites and am a ambassador, but these wings are expensive!

No personal experience, but I noticed Windance is packaging the Aluula with their 'High-end" offer calling it the "lightest and highest performance". I didn't think anything was lighter than the F-ones.

But people with a big rock wall to windward can't wing anyway. Very Happy
