Mon Oct 11, 21 2:40 am WAY Off Topic. I'm now a Beta Test Driver For Tesla!!!! |
|
|
I have been selected as an FSD Beta Test driver for Tesla. FSD Beta is the "In Development" version of Tesla's Full Self Driving Autopilot. About a thousand of us nationwide were added to the fleet tonight, the first test drivers that weren't Tesla employees or well known Tesla supporters. We all have had our driving monitored by our cars for the past two weeks, and only drivers with a perfect 100 out of 100 driving "Safety Score" were selected. I am beyond thrilled to be part of this truly historic drive to make private vehicles capable of autonomous driving!
The Autopilot is so good it's mind boggling. Is it ready for wide release yet, or is it ready to drive un-monitored? No, not yet. But monitoring my car while it drove me around town tonight convinced me that we are so much closer than people realize. I did have to intervene a couple of times, that's why I'm there. But overall the feeling is beyond my words to describe, just watching my car drive me around like I was in a science fiction movie. This. Car. Is. Truly. Incredible.
Here's the first segment from tonight's drive.

Nice knowin' ya' Nak!
JK, that's awesome! I didn't even think getting a 100/100 safety score was possible.

very cool.
i do see a few things.
when you turned left on to sierra, it didn't really look/feel like it came to a complete stop.
the speedo still said 3mph.
also, did you back it out of the garage? or was that auto?

It's interesting, because it does look like a "California stop." It wasn't though, that was a complete stop. I know that for sure because I was watching it like a hawk and remember the drive very clearly since it was my first drive with the software. Others have mentioned it though, all I can say is it must be a video thing. I'll try that same intersection again and see.
I did back it out of the garage. It will start driving, but you have to be on a street or a parking lot.

Where's your helmet??
Seriously tho, can you tune speeds for daylight versus night, or do you just have to get used to the fact (assumption) its sensors see better than you?
To me, the stop is similar to how an experienced cyclist would approach it. A 'normal' driver will stop at or even over a stop line due to momentum and sight lines relative to the driver's eyes (which are usually much farther back than front bumper, unlike that of a cyclist to their front wheel). There are studies out there (links not handy) to those behavioral differences and potential reasons cyclists are generally presumed to "run stop signs" on the whole (aside from those who actually do).
I interviewed with their cybersecurity folks once but was not terribly impressed.

As far as the stop sign, I put it on my route again, and it is definitely stopping, but the speedometer only gets down to 2. You can feel the stop, but there's just enough lag in the speedometer that it never hit's zero. There's excellent visibility in all directions at that intersection, and the stop is basically just for an instant before it continues on. But you do feel the slight rollback you get when the brakes bring you to a final stop.
You can override speed anytime with the right thumbwheel, and you can set speed offsets from the posted limit in settings.

Unironcally?
Just make sure the hooptie is loaded with sparklers and roman candles and keep the camera rolling.
In. Case. It. Doesn’t. Work.

Yes, unironically, LOL. And no, of course it doesn't work all the time yet. That's the point of what I'm doing. This is FSD Beta and is not in public release. Only testers like myself have access, and our job is to help train the AI.
I monitor the car and intervene if it makes an unsafe mistake. When I intervene, video from all eight cameras and other sensors is stored and uploaded to the Tesla autonomous driving engineers. If the car makes a serious, but not unsafe mistake, I tag the mistake, and again video is stored and sent to the development team. On each release, I put together my impressions and comments and send those to the engineers as well. In addition to all of this, all of the data from all of my drives is uploaded and is used to help the AI "learn" how to drive. Tesla is currently building one of the most powerful super computers in the world. Once finished in the near future, this super computer "Dojo" will take over the analysis of data and learning.
It's just exciting as hell for me to be a part of this effort, so yeah, I consider myself pretty lucky.

Nice video Mike—camera work was impeccable.
Would you mind sending the car out for a late night doughnut run for me though? I’ll take a dozen old fashioned and will put the cash on the drivers seat.

You’ve seen how the movies with supercomputers end, right?😳😆👍
