Fri Sep 03, 21 1:38 pm Hinged knee brace suggestions ? |
|
|
I have completely torn my MCL and Acl, so my knee is incredibly unstable when I kite. I'm looking for suggestions from fellow kiters who use a hinged knee brace for support while kiting. Also, information where to buy a good one. Thanks in advance, Butch. _________________ butch simones |

Hate to say it but surgery is most likely needed if you have grade 3 acl and mcl tears, and you want to return back to kiting without fear. Having those 2 ligaments torn while kiting is a recipe for knee dislocation which could cause more permanent damage and be life threatening if it happens in the middle of the river. I'm speaking from experience as I've had 7 knee surgeries, and a shoulder surgery. The shoulder kept dislocating and the final straw was when it happened again mid session in the middle of the river. Had about 3 seconds to let go of the kite, put the shoulder back in, then ride back to shore, and then later scheduled surgery. It's just not worth it... You're better off trying to strengthen your quad stabilizer muscles in prep for surgery.... Lastly, if you really need a brace, Donjoy makes most of the braces you see on pro football players. |

I have knee replacement scheduled, but it's not going to happen for 3 months. I'm looking for something to stabilize it in the meantime. Thank you for your advice. Who sells the Donjoy braces? _________________ butch simones |

Donjoy carbon brace worked well for me for years before I had the knee replacement. Custom fit is best... expensive and worth it. It is designed to fit best against bare skin but I found a good fit over my wetsuit as it would not move around at all. A knee sleeve like the kind you wear under the knee brace works well stretched over the whole brace to keep the velcro attachments from coming loose in the water. It is a bit of a challenge to get the brace to work under the extremes of kiteboarding but it does give you confidence and stability until you put the new knee in. I would talk to your surgeon first to OK this route for your particular situation. Good luck. |

I second the talk to your ortho doc for advise. on top of that, if they prescribe a brace for you, your insurance may pick up the tab.
And second on the custom fit part.
that said, donjoy makes a crap load of braces. many are available online, but as mentioned fit is key, and each comes in many sizes. And i have never seen the big burly braces in stores. So again, talk to your ortho doc
last thought. just wait to kite. if something goes bad, you could loose your LCL and PCL too. but if you must kite, strapless! |

I ruptured mcl acl and pcl kiting four yrs ago, had multi-ligament repair a month later. No way I would have or could have kited before surgery. The hinged brace I got thru my insurance was fitted to me but it's not good in water. I wear it kiting now but it's annoying and the straps all start flapping around then I crash trying to re strap it haha. The do not is the the best I've seen, they make some specific for water sports, even says for kiteboarding in the description of one of them. I am looking into one of those now and am willing to spend $800, I do not want to go thru that knee injury and recovery again EVER...until I need a replacement 😬
Just make sure whatever you buy is good for water, without a bunch of cloth and Velcro straps. |

I've been rocking this one all summer long after recovering from an ACL replacement graft:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005V1ZGDO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It was recommended to me by another kiter who had the same surgery. Mine has gotten a few surface nicks on it, but seems to be holding up great (I abuse it in sand & salt). I've only had one velcro strap come loose on me one time, on my first session. It stays put well.
My personal unsolicited advice to you would be to get your ligament(s) repaired and then use a brace like this to prevent reinjury as you get back into the swing of things... There is NO WAY I could have kited using this brace when my ACL was flappin'.
