Ecology has been concerned with this tank and tracking it for more than a year, when a formal leak assessment first began. B-109 is leaking into an area where other tanks have already leaked 200,000 gallons into the soil.
B-109 is miles away from the Columbia River, and the water table is 210-240 feet below the tank.
An estimated 1,700 gallons have leaked into the soil from B-109 dating back to March 2019.

As fast as the mid Columbia area is growing, I’m more worried about outdated and overloaded wastewater treatment capabilities. Human error, equipment failures, heavy rains....you name it, and we’re all swimming in poop soup.

Many years ago Outside Magazine did an article on the Hanford leak issues. A couple miles downstream they couldn’t find any contamination. Of course things change every year, but hopefully the EPA is mitigating these leaks albeit very slowly. This area is the worst contamination site in the USA. It is always in the back of my mind with major face plant water ingestion !!

The concern of Hanford leaking into the columbia river has been around for decades. To date, I am not aware of any actual leakage into the river.
In some sense I think many of us have become acclimated to this risk.
There is a group that is asking for a more proactive response.

I personally don't feel I have enough understanding on the subject to really form an opinion yet. It is my understanding that we (the federal government) have spent billions on cleanup. Could we do more? Should we do more?
20 years from now will we look back and say we should have addressed this issue more proactively?
If there are experts on the subject I would welcome their opinions.

| Let's not forget the agricultural runoff issues in this region related to pesticides that have since been banned. Hanford's not the only source of cancer-causing health issues here. (Lost a good windsurfing buddy to throat cancer when he was 43, and he'd just lost his mom to lung cancer, having grown up in Richland with his dad working at Hanford).

So, we have waste water runoff mixed with pesticide/herbicide runoff delicately warmed by nuclear waste runoff? I mean, what could go wrong? Let’s spend more time in the river...

Probably not a bad idea to wear earplugs. You don't want dangerous particulates festering in your ear canal.
My favorite is:
