My wife and I are planning to visit LV in mid-January. How thick of a wetsuit should I take? Thanks. Bill

From what I have seen most folks are in shorties or 3/2. Hardly ever see 4/3 but maybe I’m not looking closely. I’m sure you’ll get different answers as well.

For most a 3/2 shorty is great. Some wear booties on account of some beaches have washed way in recent storms and exposed more rock. Also - stepping on Mobula Mantas sting.

Depends if you're the type who runs warm or runs cool.
January in Baja is similar to June/September in the gorge.

January is the coldest part of the LV season.
December is very warm - I wear a shorty and I'm very comfortable.
In January I wear a full 3/2 suit with long sleeves and quite often I get cold.
I found myself wearing the 4/3 quite a few days - especially if I go out for a second session. January - people were wearing puffies at night last January.

Check this:

Looks like its around 78F-80F. I remember when I went, I was pleasantly surprised by water temp and ended up going out with nothing and later a 2.5mm shorty in decemember

Regarding water temps Dec versus January... Last year I arrived on Nov 18th and actually took a pair of scissors to my 4/3 Promotion and made it a shorty. By Dec 20, I knew I'd made a big mistake. When you start getting the El Norte winds these will blow in cooler water and create upwelling of deeper waters.

Serious first world problem. I cut my good wetsuit up because I was too warm.

Thank you all. I bought a 3/2 full suit and will take my shorty but I refuse to take a puffy coat!

I've camped out tent style many January stretches in the past. I've only noticed puffy coats on rare occasions when a serious El Norte cranks. (Think Blue Norther)

The Costco fake fur lined hoodys are perfect.
