Wells Island, owned by the Hood River Port Authority, should be developed as a kiting launch to provide kiters the same access to the most popular section of the Columbia River that the wind surfers enjoy from the Hatch and Swell City. The elite sections of the river are near the Hatch, the Wall/Rufus and Doug’s. Kiters have good access to Rufus, can reach the Hatch after a long up wind slog from the Event Site and Doug’s kiting access is marginal at best. By developing Wells Island, kiters would have good access to 2 of the 3 main sections of the river. In addition, the pressure on the Event Site would be decreased if Wells Island was developed.
We need to encourage the Hood River Port authority to put Wells Island on their development master plan and request grants for development from the National Parks and State Parks to help fund this development.
What do you think?

Well Island is not owned by the Port. It is Forest Service (Part of the Mt Hood National Forest).

Sounds awesome! Maybe we can get a package deal with a bridge over the RR to Lyle! And while were at it, year round grass launches from ES!

Get a foil Richard, it’s only two reaches from the event site.

Leave Wells to the poison oak, ticks, and birds.

I could not disagree more.... the stretch along Wells Island is a great place to get away from the crowds.
By surfboard it's takes 5 minutes to get there, by foil it's one reach.
If that's too hard for you - you don't deserve to be there.

Wells Island is owned by US Gov, Forest service.
However - humans are discouraged from setting foot on the island.
It's an unofficial wildlife sanctuary.

Response from the Port of Hood River supports that they do not own Wells Island. They thought it might belong to the Oregon Dept of State Lands. The Oregon Dept of State Lands does refer to Wells Island on their web site.

This makes it harder to initiate development but the goal of providing better kiting access to that part the river remains.

Two people have already replied to you that Wells Island is US Forest Service land.

Getting up to Wells from the event site is a quick handful tacks on a surfboard.

Perhaps we need to create more islands from which to launch.

I propose we scoop up all the sand from Lyle and relocate to White Salmon to create a spit equal (nay better) than HR. Once the sand is relocated, Lyle can go back to being a windsurfing-only spot.

In reality, if you cant get up there, you dont need to kite up there. I kite with a friend in his 60s and he twin tips up to the spot every time he launches at ES.

Boo to all you that say NAY to development? Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor - NO!!! We must soldier on...

I say we get the Army Corps to put in a permanent auto bridge from the South so I can drive directly into my air conditioned covered parking which will be at ground level under my exclusive 3 bed 5 bath sanctuary. There is room to put at least a dozen units in so all twelve of us lucky residents and our kids, spouses will have unfettered access to the best kiting, wingin' and WS spot on the river. NO VANS in the GARAGE!

Way better than the boring old idyllic island with all its peace & serenity hogging all those views and good winds only for those who are good enough to tack upwind...

Launch the bulldozers, with some 10,000 lumen floods we could also do some NIGHT KITING, why limit ourselves to DAYTIME how pedestrian...

Mc
