I'm going to be spending a weekend at Grayland Beach State Park and wondered if anyone knew if kiting is allowed or where the closest kite-friendly beaches are. The website mentions kite land boards, but not kite boards. Thanks for the help.

Westhaven State Park is a good place if the wind will cooperate. I was there last weekend and wasn't able to get out. Hopefully you'll have better luck than me. I did some research on PSKite and found some useful information. You may want to check it out. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any of those Seattle @$$ shavers my thread mentions.

You should be able to kite right at Grayland. You can also downwind from Grayland to Westhaven State park. South wind should be good for this.

We might be doing downwinders in Ocean Shores too, but that is an hour drive or so away for you.

Thanks for the feedback. I've never kited in the ocean before, but sounds like there's friendly options. Hoping for wind.

Looks like it might be mega windy. Be careful out there, don't knock over any families or anything. If in doubt, don't go out.

No doubt. I would prefer a mellow intro to kiting on the ocean.

By the way, is there anything about the ocean that would change my kite size selection as compared to what I do in the Gorge?

The current could affect kite size, but around there it won't matter too much. I would just rig the kite you think you need based on the wind speed.

How was it down there? Looked nasty on the sensors. Were you able to kite?

Our friends who have a cabin there canceled because of the wether. I wouldn't have risked it, anyway, hearing what the weather was like.

Resurrecting this because I'll be working in Grayland sometime in July and want to know about van camping as well as kiting there. Anyone have experience? I don't have a ton of coast experience and one concern is I'll be with non-kiters. Seems popular for families; how about kiters? (I'll check PSKite too, thx).

I don't know anything about Grayland but I can tell you about Seashore Conservation Area State Park.

You can just camp on the beach and there is loads of space.

Even if there is no wind, there is a long right hand break that goes from the corner there up towards North Cove that you can surf for 500m when the swell is coming in from WNW.

There are some sandbars at the corner there that look like they could make for some decent wave kiting too instead of just closeouts.

Thanks Angus! My challenges will be proximity to work (those wind turbines overlooking the beach) and probably having my dogs with me, so likely van-bound for sleeping arrangements. Also will have co-workers so thinking they could grab a yurt at the park as opposed to motels in Aberdeen where we usually stay. Definitely planning to surf if not kitesurfing. Keep those vids coming by the way - some of us live vicariously. Smile
