Fine. Just please, please, please, do the math on throwing away 1 heavily constructed multi use bag after 100 uses vs 100 single use lightly constructed plastic bag.

Environmentalists, scientists, politicians have a very human habit of not realizing the solution is very often just making the problem worse.

Plastic waste is a world-wide issue for sure. More of an unsightly nuisance than a human health or environmental problem. As mentioned by others, the relatively minor problems caused by plastic are not comparable to the major problems that we are ignoring.

500,000 people die from pollution in the U.S. each year. Mostly from air pollution followed by water pollution. Virtually none from plastic. Please note that diesel exhaust is now listed as Category 1 carcinogen. Category 1 is a short list (about 100 chemicals out of 850,000) of the bad-a** s**t. Plutonium and asbestos are on the short list along with diesel exhaust. In The Gorge, where air is already very compromised during inversion days, diesel vehicles are abundant while at the same time, major international cities are banning them. With polluted water consider: the Hood River is the 2nd most contaminated river in Oregon; and the Columbia is in the top 20 dirtiest rivers in the U.S. (more contaminated than the Hudson River in New York City).

180 countries met last month at the latest Conference of the Basel Convention in Switzerland to address plastic waste world-wide. Only 2 countries refused to sign. Syria and yeah, you guessed it – the U.S. refused to ratify this monumental and much needed global agreement. Good news is that the U.S. must abide by the requirements of the BC even though they didn’t sign it, if we do any international trade.

Since plastic doesn’t biodegrade, it makes sense to: bend over, pick up a straw, rinse, and re-use it. Should be good for 10,000 or so years. Wink

Kinda interesting that we are concerned about birds getting tangled in plastic, or fish eating plastic, or OMG a miniature seahorse with a Qtip; but not the 40 million animals we kill in the U.S. per day. Food for thought.

We can pick up the plastic; we can filter our water; it’s not so easy to clean up the air.

While I agree that there are many other pollution issues, I can’t agree that plastic is not an environmental problem, luke. It’ll make you cry if you grab a handful of beach on any hawaiiian island and discover the incredible amount of “colored” sand grains!

I understand that most of these plastic “bits” are not from bags, but it’s absolutely disgusting that we’ve polluted the oceans to this extreme....and we can’t even agree to ban plastic bags, which seems to me to be a no brainer.

Nothing like taking a surfing tube ride through the "green room" and have the experience hampered by hundreds of pieces of plastic. Those pics Gman make me wither and cry.
Sad

Here is a sobering article to read:

Simple solution. Let's start a new adrenaline sport: ‘Plogging’ is the Swedish fitness craze for people who want to save the planet. It’s making its way to the U.S.

How about we stop being willfully ignorant.

something like...
"hey we should ban plastic bags because the plastic end up in the ocean, we can use paper bags or reusable bags"

"yeah that is fucked up, we can use paper bags.. never saw a picture of a sea turtle choking on a paper bag".

But instead we get...
"hey we should ban plastic bags because the plastic end up in the ocean, we can use paper bags or reusable bags"

"that's bullshit, I reuse my plastic bags and all you people drive around and pollute the world and blah blah blah....

What I don't understand is why anyone even wants to use a plastic grocery bag anyway??? I mean all of your fruit just rolls out of it, they rip open and there goes your bottle of rum--oops, I mean milk. Seriously though, paper bags are better to use, recyclable, deteriorate if they find their way into the wild. It just seems to me that it's a no-brainer to get rid of single use plastic bags. Will getting rid of them fix all of our environmental woes? No. But still, every little bit helps. And plastic bags are way more than just a little bit of a problem... Regardless of your political leanings, this should be something we can all agree on. Arguing for keeping these bags seems just a bit contrarian.

Not so easy to pick up plastic trash 10KM below sea level...

(I'm not trying to shoot the messenger, but to convey the seriousness of this problem.)

Most plastics become more of a biohazard as they weather into smaller particles: the smaller the particle, the higher the surface area:volume ratio (meaning it's easier to absorb all of those delicious plasticizers) and the easier it is to ingest the particles in the first place.

All that plastic trash gets into the ocean from rivers.

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/sources/

Columbia River 1 ton/year
Padma River 100,000 tons/year
Yangtze River 100,000 tons/year

If we spend our energy fighting over plastic bags and ignore the devastating pollution from China and India, then yes Matt, we are stupid.

I dont remember the statistics but a SHIT TON of marine life and sea birds die because of plastic waste. Myself, I hate plastic shit. Plastic and particle board... uggh.

Anyways, thanks to those that are putting the energy forth to fix things, no matter how small they are!! I do what I can when I can. I sold my tundra.. fucking loved that truck, but the poor gas mileage just really got to me.

Cheers.

This was discussed on npr today -

Towns that ban plastic bags end up increasing green house gases. They switch to using more garbage bags which are thicker plastic ( more) . Also paper bags worse for environment according to the discussion.
