Tue Apr 09, 19 9:01 am cold water kiting thoughts? |
|
|
Thinking of kiting soon, maybe today, looking at my kiting gear, surf wetsuit 5/4 w/hood, maybe 1 or 2 yrs old, 5m booties, 2m gloves. Have a promotion windshirt to wear over suit, but if I had to swim it'd be a sea anchor. Any other thoughts out there on staying warm, ha, by a plane ticket to Maui.

I was wearing my drysuit today and wished I wore a lot less layers underneath it. You should be fine in the 5/4 with Promotion top over it.
Take a hydro flask of warm water and pour it inside your booties and gloves before putting them on and you will be super warm. Also, you can wear a fleece beanie under your wetsuit hood for a little more warmth if you feel you need to. _________________ KB4C!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hot water (careful it is not too hot) poured inside of a wetsuit works for keeping you warm at the beginning of a session, even with an older wetsuit. By wetting the interior with warm water, you stop that from happening with cold water.
But if you are using that trick, just remember to stay only a short swim away from where you can walk in the shallows or along the shore. And that means ditching the kite if you have problems that would take you further out, just so you do not make that short swim into a long one.
And honestly, I use new suits below 50°F water temps, and older ones above that. 50°F is also my threshold for wearing gloves. _________________ MSN has temporarily removed commenting on our websites while we explore better ways for you to engage in discussion on the issues you care about. |

I agree with Mat v. Avoid the swim. I would not go kiting this time of year without a water craft or boat escort. Seriously HC I could follow you around this weekend. |

its April go!
forget the hotwater - pump up your kite at the event site - leave it and go for a 5 minute
active swim - come back and you will be ready to kite
extra credit if you rock a speedo - one of my better insulated friends last 17 minutes in 37 degree Willamette _________________ Go Deep!

The river is rising fast. It’s up almost four feet this week, the sand bars is covered. Look for fast current. Like, can’t body drag fast enough to catch up to your board fast.
Stick with the crowd if there is any, don’t be that guy way upwind and down river chasing a board. And consider taking the beater board you don’t mind losing. Ask me how I know this...
Write your name on your boards!
Stay safe. Better to be too warm. I’ll go with the dry suit and lots of layers underneath. A cap, booties, and gloves.

I was out by myself at Stevenson last week. It went fine, but in retrospect, it was a bit sketch. A breakdown could have turned ugly. I’m going to try to stick with the crowd. At least till it warms up. _________________ Pull the cork. |

In beginning of the season I always put a shorty wetsuit on and then my 4 5 wetsuit over it and I never get cold. |

Definitely a workaround and it does work. I used to do that, but I found it took a bit longer to dress and get rigged up (bigger deal when others are part of your posse; like on downwinders). I also remember it was more constricting with regards to movement, comfort, and feel. Lastly, I found that doing this stretched out the seams of my full wetsuit, rendering it less thermally warm and less water tight, , , less functional wetsuit.
Now I just use one thicker suit.
But it is spring and folks are jones'in for some water and air time, so they will endure colder conditions and get creative in order to get a session under their belts, or in this context, harness.
Use common sense when riding this time of year; dress for the swim not the ride/air temps. Keep an eye out/on all others too.
Be safe out there and good winds to all!!! Last edited by Sasquatch on Fri May 17, 19 9:34 am; edited 1 time in total |

Along with the cold issues another more dangerous issue is flotsam. With high river levels there will be many ankle breakers floating by, especially for foilers! _________________ moondog |
