Anyone have any recommendations for decent wave riding spots in the winter? I've been trying to research this for a little bit but keep coming across the same sites with too many vague details.

Top priority for me would be spots in Mexico, central america, the Carribean since travel is a little easier. Open to recommendations for longer travel though. Not a big fan of super crowded areas.

3-6' surf is my ideal fun range.

Bonus points for areas that have a flatwater option for my partner who is still learning. Would also appreciate good snorkeling nearby.

Thanks!

I don't know of any "secret" spots that won't be crowded in mid winter.
The DR and Barbados fit your description - especially the DR.
The prime windy season in winter in the the Caribbean is January - March.
December is shoulder season depending on which island you visit.
Mexico is out - the wave spots don't get wind in the winter months.
Costa Rica doesn't have waves at the kite spots.
South Africa and Western Oz are good - but maybe too far.
Get yourself a copy of the The World Kitesurfing guide - it's amazingly comprehensive for planning a big trip.

Lester Polyester (the original Gorge Animal) has a guesthouse and Slingshot Gear at

I’ve heard good things about Pacos Mayo, Peru for goofyfooters too.

Of course Maui is sooo easy and there’s an airfare war now that Southwest joined in

Wow, thanks for the website link. I'd love to pick up a copy of that book. Roughly $150??? Seems like it would be worth it tho...

DR has been on my list for a long time, glad to hear that would fit the time frame. I don't know anything about Barbados, I'll have to look that up!

Another guy down here in Los Barriles has been telling me to go to Brazil almost every day. I know next to nothing about it but his hype is definitely building in me. With English and broken Spanish, any idea on how hard communication would be? The main language is Portuguese correct?

I'm getting pretty balanced with my riding regular and goofy. Peru would be cool for a variety of reasons for sure.

Maui is interesting but I've heard it's ridiculously regulated on where you can ride? Honestly I feel like I would be going there to snorkel and adventure around the islands, not kite. Maybe I'm wrong about this and just need to get out there. I think I have 70,000 southwest miles sitting in the account right now...

I "got by" in Brazil for a month with my limited Spanish. You just repeat and shout Spanish enough and you'll get your point across. Many words are very similar.
Beer = Cerveja = Cervesa
Bathroom = Banheiro = Bano
Food = Comida = Comida
Bed = Cama = Cama

Just spent 2 weeks in pacasmayo. If you’re 140 pounds it was paradise. I weigh 195 and did a lot of foiling.

Foiling is on the list for things to learn before this next trip. Los Barriles has been great, but I want waves.
