How is Hawaiian Airlines with regards to kite gear and bags? Do they charge an arm and a leg?
Is Maui better for wind and swell in late Sept or late October?
Thanks. |

I have just checked it and paid the bag fee and they were fine. No problem. They even give you a free meal now. _________________ Ozone Reo's. C&k Beach Boy Service, Windsurfing Waikiki, Hawaiian Windriders, NSRN. |

1surfer - what did you check? A golf bag or a 6 foot surf bag?
September - little or no swell.
October - gets better and better for swell as the month progresses.
November - best chance for both wind and swell.
Alaska has direct flights from PDX to Maui and great policy for kite equipment. |

I usually travel with y family and we normally have one check kite bag each. So we check 3 kite bags. They are not golf bags. One is a standard Dakine kite bag and one is an Ozone kite bag. I also have several that I made that are just under the allowed measurements. I do make sure they are less then 49 lbs. Never had a problem. The only time that we have a problem is curbside check at United on Maui. The sky cap gives me a bunch of shit if there is a twin tip in the bag and sends us to the counter but at the counter they never make me pay more than the standard bag check amount. $25 or something. I usually dont travel with kite surf boards as ours live in Hawaii. If I do check a surfboard I do have to pay the surfboard fee. I dont know how to get around the surfboard fee. If I do get a new surfboard from outside of Hawaii I get it shipped directly as that is usually cheaper than the checked surfboard fee. Most people can go to Jimmy Lewis at his shop there and he will give pro deal and thats almost 1/2 off retail. There are also a zillion kite surfboards for sale there cheap and thats one way around the fee. But Hawaiian is all good for normal kite gear and a twinny in a bag. You even get rum punch with Koloa rum now ! _________________ Ozone Reo's. C&k Beach Boy Service, Windsurfing Waikiki, Hawaiian Windriders, NSRN. |

Thanks 1surfer - that's the great thing about Alaska vs. all other airlines.
They don't charge extra just because you have a surfboard..... or twin tip.
I travel with a Dakine bag on rollers that is 6 feet long.
Alaska has charged me $0.00, 25$, $50, and $75 depending on their mood at the time.
Even $75 is a bargain. Usually they treat the bag as basic luggage and charge $25 or $50.
Keeping the weight under 50 is important.
Oh - and Alaska serves a free Mai Tai just before landing in Maui..... Aloha! |
