Was this left or stolen! Tired of hearing lost as if it fell out of the car!

His name and number are on the gear along with "Reward."
Hopefully a phone call gets made, or gear is dropped off at Port/SecondWind/Windance/BigWinds...
No questions asked
Otherwise, might be time to contact Pdx/SF/Seattle user groups to be on the lookout.

On pins and needles here.
Hoping my “honest folks return stuff” theory holds up.

It's too bad that there are Stoke killers roaming the kite beach , not like it used to be . Lock up your gear and don't set anything down for even a minute. Writing your name on your gear only works when the honest folks pick it up .

Maybe hide something like a Tile inside the mast (assuming it's hollow and mast doesn't block RF), although a gps beacon would be much better to nail down the location of the lost/stolen gear.
edit: btw. Tile can give a false sense of security since once it's out of range of your device it depends on "crowd-sourcing" the search using any other devices running Tile app in the area. So if someone takes the gear to their home and they don't have any neighbor using Tile than the gear may not pop-up anytime soon. So a gps locator would be better, but more expensive to setup.

At the windsurf end of the grass there is (was) a cable running along in the grass? Maybe I'm stuck with an impression from the 90s?
Anyway, perhaps it's finally time we're all needing bike-locks on our gear while we're having fun. I'm sure there's a similar issue at 3rd Ave, Crissy, Sherman.

YES! Set up a sting with cameras and a tile/gps on the gear. Time to make an example.

To be fair, this isn't anything new. I had a someone break into my car at the Event Site a decade ago, they grabbed my favorite board that I'd still be riding today if it were up to me. I know too that I wasn't even close to being the first one to have such an experience. These days the most I'll ever leave on the grass is an old kite bag. I hope the board and foil show up and will keep an eye on the classifieds in my area. All it takes is one asshole, the other 99% of people are great.
Also the Tile idea is cool!

No need to install locks etc because if you're not launching, landing or rigging keep your gear in your locked car to make room for people that are.....you know......launching, landing and rigging.
Second, don't leave anything laying on the grass while you go have dinner and especially if you're not returning until after 7:00 PM because the majority of the crowd has already left so it makes the pickings easy for people that make bad choices.
I'm really surprised it hasn't shown up because stealing a Foil takes an effort, unlike a kite bag or bar, so somebody knew the value of the set-up and had a large vehicle ready for the task.
Like KiteBot said, every year as long as I can remember this happens annually and I really do not know why the Port doesn't install a few basic cameras to track the parking lot and grass to quickly shut down this type of ass hat activity.......or maybe they have and are now reviewing the data???? One can only hope.

Assume the thieves are reading this forum - you just gave away the best strategy for a sting.
Let's say he is on video picking up the gear...
"I was gonna post on lost and found - haven't gotten around to it yet".
" I was gonna turn it in to the port but I haven't had time yet".
" It's my gear - I bought it used from a guy on a beach in California last month".
Previous posts about stolen gear on Craig's list.
You call the police and they say - "prove it's your stuff - give us the serial numbers".
"oh - you didn't write down serial numbers - we can't help".
Bottom Line:
Write your name on your gear.
Register the gear with manufacturers website.
Save the receipts. Write down all serial number.
Take pictures of the gear including the serial numbers. Take pictures of receipts.
Don't leave your gear on the grass and boisterously advertise in the parking lot that you're going drinking down the street (true story).
