Sunny and lighter east winds. Caps out at Rooster today. Get some if you're equipped to deal with the cold waters. |

The water level looks pretty high so there will be no beach to launch from meaning drift launch, launching in the parking lot and walking down the stairs or using a boat. Current conditions are for advanced kiters only at Rooster. |

The coast guard chart is misleading. Use the 1-10-1 rule. 1 minute to overcome the gasp reflex, 10 minutes til exhaustion, 1 hour til hypothermia. Hypothermia can be delayed with a wetsuit; exhaustion is only mitigated with flotation ( wetsuit, PFD, surfboard, inflated kite).
In other words, cold water fatalities are usually exhaustion-related drowning before hypothermia.
FYI, the most recent non-drowning, river-immersion, hypothermia fatality in the Columbia River Gorge was during month of August (sit on top kayaker). |
