We used to fly United to get to Bonaire every year as it was a direct flight from Dallas instead of Miami San Juan that takes like 20 hours with layovers. They have had this embargo for years during the holiday season. I showed up with my whole family, a dog and like 1000 dollars in excess baggage and they refunded our tickets on the spot because they did not tell us about the embargo. American was a way longer flight but it was the only way to get all our stuff home. It really sucks to travel with boards so I have stashed boards around spots that I think I for sure want to go back to. In all reality I also look at it from the point of getting to buy a new board too. But yeah, fuck United airlines, should be a kitewide boycott!

I just flew on Southwest with my "golf bag"... I carefully loaded it and weighed it the night before to exactly 49.5lbs, and that is indeed what the bag check scale showed. I had to put a couple of extra things in my suitcase (harness and leash) to keep the golf bag under 50lbs. I used the kiosk to check my bags and I just selected 1 suitcase and 1 golf bag... no extra charge at all. Even though it is bigger than real golf bags, no one questioned me or measured it etc. Same deal outbound and on the return trip Thumb's Up

I just came back yesterday from LB, JAN. 11-20. Flew down on Alaska and back with United. On the way down, no problems with my dive-gear bag (with kites) and my wakeboard-bag (140cm twin tip). They were standard checked bag fees of $25.

On the way back however, SJD-SFO-PDX, it was with United. When I checked in down there they asked what was in the board bag, as it was obvious, and they said it would be $200, like mentioned in earlier posts. After about 10 minutos of the clerk trying to find this in the computer, she gave up and I ended up not having to pay the fee. Whew! Lucked out on that one. But yes, never again on United.

On a side note, I flew back on a Saturday afternoon, which was a very quite at SFO and PDX. The bartender in SFO said that it was like that every Saturday. It made for a relaxing trip back.

I'm not impressed with united's baggage fees...
btw alaska air has a fare sale today. I just checked and cost to maui would be $357 before taxes.

Few people know that Alaska waives all oversize/overweight fees for any sports equipment including surfboards and kite gear https://www.alaskaair.com/content/travel-info/baggage/special-baggage/traveling-with-sporting-equipment

American Airlines.
Just got back from Costa Rica. There website says no bag fee for kiteboard gear under 62" and under 50lbs. Otherwise $150.
But there is a little asterix that says if you have there AA card for the free bag. I paid $25 each way for a coffin bag each way. I carried my second kite as carry on.

I have an Alaska card and I only fly Alaska. My first few flights with them 3 years ago think I paid $25 for a 7 foot Surf bag.

Over the past 2 years they don't charge me anything and I fly maybe 3-4 times a year with a big oversized Surf bag. (one of which is for sale right now for $100)

Alaska is the best.

FYI. I was getting a bit close to the 50# max for Alaska so I put my bar in my carry on. TSA pulled me aside and told me it had to be checked baggage as it could be a weapon. That was at SJD airport 2 weeks ago.
