I've read Wylie Flyotee's post on Sonora San Carlos. I need to stay close to PHX this winter, aging parent. Does anyone have any experience there? Best wind month, water temps, launches, places to stay, etc.

Are you on Facebook? Contact me: Kip Wylie and I have a friend who lives in San Carlos and kites every available windy day there. He will be willing to text you the conditions and forecast when it's needed. In general it's about the same schedule as La Ventana/Los Barilles.
The launch is nice sugar sand, with nice flat water setup, or walk over a sandspit and head out into a big bay. It also has two or three nice bars within a few paces.
When will you be there? PM me. I'm driving through this route heading south and will likely stay a week in late Dec/early Jan.
My very favorite launch is called "La Manga" which is up a dirt road about 2 miles north of the main launch. Huge open bay, 80/80 air/water temps. Clean steady winds.

I'm on the fence with that decision. It's a bit more money to drive the Baja and cross on the ferry to Mazatlan... but on balance it's a more pleasant drive. So much of #15D Nogales to Puerto Vallarta gets boring, like endlessly driving between Stockton and Sacramento forever. I'm tainted after my 6th run.
We'll see.
Favorite drive is Hwy 5 down the east shore of the Baja Penninsula. Remote and beautiful.

What are you up to?
Kip

I live part time in San Carlos. My favorite months to kite are February and March. I wear a 4/3 wetsuit then. Similar wind conditions as the Baja East Cape but colder. 2 venues. One flat water the other open ocean swell. Best place to stay is a rental house in Costa Del Mar.

I always stay in the cheaper ($45 USD) rooms available at Totonaka RV Park San Carlos. Swimming pool, laundry service, quiet, about 10 minutes to the kite launch:

One negative issue with staying in town is you can miss a session. You can be in town and not know it's windy at the kiting sites. If you are on the north side of town you will know it's windy at the kite sites. Town is very protected from the wind. I suggested Costa Del Mar because it's on the beach of the most popular kite site and you don't need to drive. A neighbor rents out his first floor for less than the cost of renting a whole house. Nothing fancy. I don't know the cost. If you PM me I'll see if I can get his contact info for you.
