Fri Aug 11, 17 6:40 pm Kitefoiling = Roasted feet! Booties? |
|
|
Anyone have a suggestion for thin booties that have good grip? Since foiling my feet are getting badly burned regardless of the layers of suncreen. Looking for sun protection, better grip than bare feet, and preferably thin and split toe. Water shoes might work if I shim up my foot hook I'm size 13.
Thanks,
Eric

I use Quicksilver Reefboot 2mm for summer. No split toe, but good fit and feeling, good grip. Got them at 2nd Wind in HR

Most of the surf manufacturers make thin reef booties, in a variety of styles (split toe, non-split toe). Any decent surf shop that caters to folks who travel should have a few types & sizes in stock.
I've used them for kiting w/ a surfboard; they oughtta work for foiling.

yeah we've all been wearing shoes. stevenson launch is rocky as well as all the winter kiting spots so we've all grown accustomed to wearing hard soled shoes instead of booties. foil decks are pretty robust so no worries on heal dents anymore. if you go with shoes, you may need shims for the foot hooks. I use shims under my hooks to elevate them for clearance.
adidas climacool are the current faves, and the nike flyknits work great as well but the glue doesn't seem to hold up to water exposure
if you are using foot straps, I would think twice about using shoes as you might not be able to eject when you want to.

Thanks Jim. I think i'll start with thin booties as I am not ready for prime time strapless yet. I pulled the front hook yesterday and was able to water start a few times but the energy expended was like a two hour cross fit class. gonna work on popping up to foil quickly and then pull hook off once I can do that. I upgraded to a sportier foil and the waterstarts for me are still a little spazzy compared to the Hoover Glide Strapless is my goal. Then, the shoes make a lot of sense I think.

Slingshot hooks are very tall - they fit fine with sneakers.
NSI not so much.

I picked up some super thin booties at Second Wind as per a posted suggestion. Really nice. Good grip and I can feel my board. Gonna try the shoe deal when I pull the hooks. My big a$$ feet won't fit under hooks with shoes...

Don't forget to double knot them. Untied in the middle of the river was a challenge

Rarely. They fit very snug like socks. I have had some get in around the heel area, but it's super easy to flip the heel down via the pull tab and flush it out.
Scroll down on this KF thread and you'll see some pics I posted of the Vibram vs. Injinji. It will give you some good perspective on the sock-like fit.

I don't foil but I always wear Vibram Five Fingers (KSD) when kiting or SUPing. Basically I have baby feet and hate walking on all the rocks plus if I ever have to do the walk of shame my feet will be ready.
