Sun Aug 06, 17 7:08 pm Kites for Oahu in early October?? |
|
|
My family will be staying haleiwa for a week in early October and I am deciding wether to bring kites? Anybody know if Mokuleia or Kailua are a sure bet for wind that time of year? And if so what size kite predominantly?
I grew up on Oahu many many eons ago, and have not been back since 1999! So I am completely out of the loop now. Any info would be helpful. |

That could be a hit or miss time. As long as trade patterns are setup you should be good with a 9 or 10 on the light side and 6 to 7 meter on the high side. You could use a 12 if it's light but who likes that? Good chance for an early winter swell, October is a good bet for you to kite that spot in epic conditions. Nice locals there who enjoy green and brown bottles too.🍺 |

Thanks Scriffler. I am planning on the early winter swell for surfing, but a little kite action in epic conditions sure would spice it up!
Maybe I should just bring a 8m and hope for the best, any more kites or kite related gear in my baggage and my wife will kill me!
I was planning on bringing boards, but have decided to just pick up a used surfboard when I get there- anybody have any recommendations for shops for buying a quality used board in haleiwa? |

This place is awesome. I found a nice Waimea gun there for 400 bucks. They have SO many boards. I bartered on mine too, they wanted 500. Otherwise Craigslist is just as good. Hawaii has more boards than anywhere in the world so also the cheapest used boards. My friend from Oregon came here and took all used boards back cause they were so nice and so cheap. Now his old quiver is rotting under my house. |

It's been a few years, but there was a shop right in Haleiwa called something like the Haleiwa Surf Shop (pretty original, right?) that had tons of cool surfboards. Most memorable was their board collection hanging in the rafters. It was like a surf museum: Greenough spoons, Lightning Bolts, Brewers, you name it... It's worth a visit and worth the crick you'll get in your neck from looking up so much. |

I know Jesse Richman is a local Hawaii kiter, you could hit him up to ask. He's pretty good about responding. I went over to his FB page and shot him some questions in the comments, or directly - Can check out http://bit.ly/KiteboardingParadise.
Hope this helps, I know he knows the ins and outs of the islands! |

I don't know the wind seasons there. but from experience on my trips I've used a 12m in kailua more than any other kite... never 6m for me.
Mokolea 9m has been more common with a few 6m days. Mokolea is a thermal wind on sunny days. With an already prominent north wind the wind amplifies through the valley. |

I would bring 9/12 combo for Moks if you are looking to wave ride that time of year. |

Yeah, Oahu is never a sure bet... To be honest my most used kite out there has been a 17m turbine. I've used a 14m and a 12m as well, but have only needed a 10m once out of many years. Now that I'm foiling though, an 8m and a 10m would be good to have. I will say that the last couple of years have seemed windier in Kailua, either that or I've just been a bit luckier than in years past. |

Moks is ez if in Haleiwa, with potential surf. If enough N component you can kite out of several spots on NS. Check tides. Kailua is eastside and dependent on trades. 9 moks/12 kailua. Haleiwa Surf Shop (Tophat) is now North Shore Surf Shop and still great. There are a lot of boards around. Aloha |
