Anyone know of the best place to exchange cash in or very near Whistler?
I'm going to be checking out a bike while I'm there and the buyer wants cash CAD. I know there are some VBCEs in Vancouver, but I'd prefer not to haul my camper through downtown Vancouver.
Thanks. _________________ stoke the share |

The exhange right now is ~0.80.
You might actually get a pretty good rate at your local bank down here in the US. Have you checked with them?
Also, check your current bank and see if they partner with any banks up north and then you can use their atms. You can also sometimes get a pretty good rate that way, as long as you aren't paying a fee.
When I bought my bike in Canada, I used paypal with the guy sitting right next to me. I did the transaction (sent it as a friend, so you don't get charged a fee). He checked his account and saw the cash was in there and we were good to go. Iirc, I got a decent rate from paypal as well. _________________ http://northwestriders.com/

I checked with my bank prior to posting. They don't carry CAD, they could get it but I of course waited to check to long.
I asked if we could use paypal or google wallet, but they wanted cash.
Good idea about ATMs. I know my bank doesn't have a presence in CA, but I'll ask about the ATMs. _________________ stoke the share |

The best rates I found where at VBCE. They have several offices in Vancouver and the immediate area. I'll check the border crossing to see how they compare when I go through. _________________ stoke the share |

Are you supposed to declare it on the way back in? And if you do, does customs charge you a fee based on what you paid? |

You only have to declare cash if you are carrying more than $10k. |
I was wondering if you have to declare the bike on the way back in as a purchase? I know they are draconian when it comes to bringing dairy to Canada (like no more than $20 bucks of dairy). I wonder if they would give you a hard time for bringing a 5k bike back to the US. |

When I went up to buy my bike, I crossed the border and met the dude around noon then
came back straight after that. I got a signed receipt from the guy with serial number and sale price etc.
Got to the border, told the border guard I bought a bike from a private seller for my personal use and I was bringing it back to use, not to sell in the US. He asked me to see the bike (it was in the back of my truck.) I opened the back, he saw the bike and he said have a nice day.
I think I got lucky and I was expecting to pay a duty, but didn't have to.
I would declare it and pay whatever duty they charge you (it is hard to tell, but I think it is like 3%?) might be different if you buy from a private party.
Would suck to say nothing and then have them take your bike, not worth it IMO. _________________ http://northwestriders.com/
