DO NOT LAND KITES IN THE GRASSY PICNIC AREA AT THE DAY USE FACILITY AT SOUTH BEACH.

This is not allowed and the out of town idiots who do this like the Canadian yesterday are risking the safety of tourists and beach goers with this type of bad behavior. Visiting kiters need to follow the established protocol of the local kitesurfers by doing all the launching and landing of kites out on the open beach well away from people, little kids, dogs, horses, etc. Laying out and winding up of lines should be done out on the beach as well.

The grassy area by the parking lot and restroom is to be used only for pumping up and drying of kites with no lines attached. Kites should be carried on the sand pathway to and from the beach with no lines attached. The persons that attempt to land kites in the grassy picnic area are risking the safety of everyone in the area and jeopardizing our access to the spot for kitesurfing. If anyone attempts to land kites when local kiters are there, you will be confronted and routed back to the beach to do it properly. I also encourage out of towners to spread the word and also enforce the rules.

Do you kooks need some signs, like at Kanaha or Hood River, so you can learn how to behave? When I go surf or kite a spot where I'm not local, I strike up conversations, ask the locals where to launch/land/paddle out, and observe for awhile. Try that approach. It works. World-wide.

And please, PLEASE, use a towel when changing out of your wetsuit. Nobody wanted to see that Rick Flair lookalike's old man junk flapping in the not-so-stiff breeze yesterday afternoon. Jeezus. Rolling Eyes

Why would people launch/land there anyway? Gusty, swirly wind. Trees, cars, outhouse, picnic tables. That's a disaster waiting to happen. So stupid when you have miles of open beach just over the berm and you need to walk over the beach anyway to get to the water.

When you're visiting and behave in an egregious manner, as documented in the initial post in this thread, and a local kiter approaches you and kindly requests that you adopt the local rules/customs/norms, don't act like a defensive prick. Don't tell them how you've kited here hundreds of times. Don't try to wow them with how awesome you think your kite-handling skills are. Don't offer some lame cop-out excuses. Smile, thank them for their concern for EVERYONE'S well-being, and do as they ask. It's not about you, it's not about the concerned local--it's about preserving access to our COMMON RESOURCE.

There are other ways we can have this conversation:

With a group of now-angry locals in your face.

With the park ranger.

It's your choice...

Silly how so many many people will pump & rig & launch in places like this... logic being it's 50' closer to my car?
Knew a guy once who drove UNDER the bridge at Mosier to get his hefty gear closer to the launch. Huh?
Seems like we're here for some "exercise" right?

It must be a Canadian thing. In like 2005 there was an rv full of Canadians kiting south beach. They walked up on the dunes and dropped their kites right by the picnic tables. I told them it wasn't cool and they stopped right away. I could not believe they would think dropping their kites on families picnicking was cool. They ended up giving me a couple beers and some brats afterwards while I told them how dumb they were. Has to be a Canadian thing.

Hey Windian, perhaps you can make a few signs and post them in the area (w/Ranger permission of course) for the not so smart and lazy?

Follow the local ways!

With all due respect, we don't want signs (despite my cynical mention of signage earlier in the thread)! Why would we advocate for more State-sanctioned regulation for this thing that we do to get away from it all? Signs draw attention, attention leads to blame, and blame (be-lame) leads to lawyers getting involved.

We want to keep it low key, like it is 9.5 months out of the year. We want people to kite intelligently and respectfully. We want to not need signs--and outside of the months of July, August, and part of September, we do not need signs. A large proportion of the population of Lincoln County can't read anyway, and the signs would have to be bulletproof.

The solution to this problem is really simple: talk to a local! We really are friendly, even if some of us sound like assholes on the internets. We'll launch and land kites all day long for people we have never met, much to the detriment of our own kite session time. We'll give free advice--some of it good, even. We'll clean up your trash after you leave it all over the beach. We'll tell you where the best restaurants are. We'll tell you where the fish are biting. And we'll keep your girlfriends company while you kite. Laughing

We want to keep it as "no signs" and keep the government agencies out of the mix. Best policy when in Rome is to do as the Romans do. Just ask a local kiter for how the place works and use some common sense, then you will just blend in as one of the crew.

Idea
