Wed Jun 21, 17 8:27 am Sauvie tips and tricks |
|
|
Lots of new faces at Sauvie Kite Beach with the beach getting pretty chaotic at times. Here's some friendly tips until the day we get some official signage there:
* Pump and set your kite at the base of the berm and run your lines diagonally upwind toward the river. This allows the max number of kites to rig, launch and land without overlapping lines. Setting your bar opposite (blue on the left) and running your lines to the back of the kite works best. (Newbies are taught to launch water side for safety but this doesn't work at Sauvie. Nor does running your lines straight up or down wind).
* Also keep your gear, camping chairs, etc. up by the berm out of the way.
* When taking a break or changing kites, roll your lines up
* Stay north of stairway 8, and politely suggest to non-kiters that they stay south of stairway 8. Avoid any conflicts with non-kiters.
* Whenever possible, go with assisted launches and lands to reduce any chance of kook-outs.
***Other good tips***
* Hide valuables in your car. Sauvie is known for "smash & grabs".
* Avoid the freighter channel on the far third of the river. They can't stop. The wind dies and you could be hosed.
* On the really crowded days trying to park your car in enough so friends can double park behind you.
* When the tide is high and the beach is narrow, you may need to back up into the water when launching. Don't expect your launcher to hike up the berm for you.
* Sauvie wind is generally light and variable. Rig big, chill out and accept it. Bring garbage bags and pick up trash or a rake for stick debris if you get antsy. And of course plenty of beer.

Sage Slither advice as always but who would have ever imagined a Sauvies protocol post would become necessary.

I always thought the best advice i ever read on here about SI was to keep your 1m trainer in your rig for the hot girl that thinks she might want to learn to kite, and your 03 slingshot fuel 21m for the 300+lbs fisherman that might want to give it a whirl too

Both those points are valid and true. Your first point actually holds true at most locales except when Rooster when it is nuking or Pistol River is cranking. Now with the advent of foils, the 300 lbs fishman can use a 17m instead.

when you are the kiter riding away from the beach, give a little room to the kiter heading towards the beach, because this is all that person can see....

If your teaching someone, take them up north away from the launch area crowd and away from any non-kiters. Full force tomahawk kite crashes in the middle of the rigging area are frowned upon.
And if you see someone exhibiting risky behavior, find a polite and reasonable way to suggest to them they move.
But Monkey's right, it really never gets windy enough at Sauvie anymore...

Fri Jun 23, 17 10:43 am leave the self-pride @ home & DON'T forget COLD BEER |
|
|
Keep your pride at home (gear comes first). . . and pack plenty of cold beer.
Yesterday evening I saved two boards from floating down the river. The first dude lost both his board and kite far from shore and downriver and was actually pulled in by another kiter. More on that later.
The second kiter was a total newbie and had her boyfriend come out on a SUP to save her and her kite. He wound up the lines and packed the kite and his GF and paddled back into shore. I deposited the board way up river where everyone launched.
Back to the guy who lost everything. I actually tried to get his kite too, but it was on the Washington side of the river, in a backeddie, and the wind was sketchy too; too light and my kite was in danger of falling out of the sky. So I went back to shore and told the guy what was up and why I couldn't/wouldn't retrieve his kite. I told him to go up to the Nude beach as I had been up there earlier kiting and saw a few power boats moored up.
So he put his pride aside and some extra cold beers by his side and went up to ask for help. This nude pasty white and kinda super red sunburned boat owner was more than happy to help.
I was laughing my ass off after the kiter told me that the nude boat owner had not one, but two cock rings on his Johnson and the entire time he (the kiter with the lost kite) was trying to not see/look at the Johnson adorned with 2 rings more than the one time he first saw it while on the recovery/rescue boat ride. He thanked the 2 ringed Johnson boat owner by giving him some cold beer and a sincere thank you for retrieving his kite.
"Truck driver cold" beer was offered to me while this story was told to me and I gladly accepted from the guy who lost his kite, board, and was towed in. He also gave a beer to the dude who towed him in.
NO BEER offered by the gal or her boyfriend to me, sadly. :-/
