Hi,
Will be in Tulum the end of April/beginning of May. Was looking for any advice on where to kite/rent gear/stay.
Thanks in advance,

Went there last year. Beautiful place, medium winds. Mostly onshore, but some days are bigger and more sideshore. Normally used a 10 or 12m2. Stay in ready mode as some early mornings it blows.
Extreme Control is run by Marco. He's a great dude, Italian and very friendly. Best to communicate with him through WhatsApp at 52 1 984 745 4555
We stayed at Posada Lamar right on the beach. Very hip spot, a treehouse feel to it. Breakfast served on your porch. Other meals were at beachfront restaurants or dinners on the street behind. The supermarket has a good bakery we loaded up at every few days. Definitely do some snorkeling at the caves called Cenotes. Unique.

Take a cave-diving class if the wind doesn't blow. Unlike the local kiting, the cenotes are a world-renowned cave diving destination.
Ask the dive operators around Akumal for Jim Coke. He's a legend.
And hey, if you have room in your bag, bring me back a bottle of Xtabentun! |

Tulum 12-14m south winds with choppy small swell. I brought my 13m and rented boards from Marco. Coba, cenotes, and the National Park lagoon boat ride were memorable. Isla Blanca 9-12m on Norths with butter flat. Ikarus rents boards and kites there |

Akumal |
Akumal has a very unique estuary for world class snorkeling. Loved the vibe and feel for the beach very close to Akumal. I think it was called Turtle Beach as the turtles love foraging and resting there as there is a bay that has lots of underwater glasses for the turtles. The cave diving is off the hook too. While one can go without any suit, I would suggest a 3m shortie for the cave diving as the caves well are out of the sun.
Side note: Jerry Garcia from the Greatful Dead was a life-long heroin addict basically. He wasn't in the best of shape but being over weight and out of shape didn't matter being underwater. . . he loved to scuba dive and snorkel. He had a house within walking distance of Akumal's estuary. The String Cheese Incident band (TSCIB) has since purchased the property as they are kind of a tribute/derivative of The Greatful Dead. My info is 9 years old now and the last time I visited down there.
Here is one of my few favorites of TSCIB although not a Dead tune; it is by Talking Heads and a tune from the movie Wall Street.
