If anyone from Eugene is reading this, I'm looking for someone with info on good places to launch at the ditch (fern ridge reservoir). i have a foil with me and just want a somewhat decent launch to go out from. I only have a foil right now so i cant really do the coast. post a reply on here if your up for kiting the ditch! I'm also open to other places that have more consistent wind, I mainly just want a kiting spot that's close to the city of Eugene.

Dude, why don't you just go out there on a windy afternoon and take a look for yourself. Explore, take and chance. And if you go say "hi" to Mr. Hanky and all his fiends for me. . . "HOWDY! HO!"

well to be honest i don't have my car right now, Ill have it next week. I just thought that there would be someone nice enough to give me a lowdown of the place/ someone i can go kite with, gets lonely kiting by my self real fast. Is the sewage just dumped into fern ridge or something?

This is what the site is for - use it to connect with other kiters and get the low down on safety issues....

Yeah, don't worry about Trollsquatch. Laughing

I've windsurfed at Fernridge 600 years ago. As I recall I just went to the nearest access there off the highway on the southern end. Prevailing summer winds will be onshore there. I can't recall if there's a beach or only the built up berm where you step off into waist deep water. It could be a bit tricky with a foil.

I actually taught a windsurf class at U of O. If there anyone still doing that they may have more info. Thumb's Up

thanks A.K. I actually got a session from Perkins peninsula, a little tricky like you said, but definitely do-able. I checked out lookout Point reservoir and it looks better for foiling (light winds n stuff) does anyone know of a good launch for lookout point? i found a boat ramp on the north end, but the grounds covered with stumps and rocks. Also if anyone wants to go out for a session somewhere close to Eugene pm me, trying to meet some fellow kiters here.

Heyo,
Just moved to Eugene, and while I'm looking forward to kiting all over the coast and river, Fern Ridge might be the closest workable for a quick ride after work. I'm busy most of the day but am thinking of trying out Fern Ridge when it's supposed to be windy in the late afternoon. If you're also a Eugene kiter not hitting up the great wind in the rest of Oregon tomorrow pm me!

Hey so I've lived in Eugene for about 8 years and would really like to try out kiteboarding been looking at taking a class and renting equipment any good instructors in the area or should I just do the air pirates thing? I also live right by fern ditch so I'm hoping I could head over there after work. I already do with my jet ski from time to time.

others will have more informed opinions, but from what I've read the best (only?) lessons are either in the Gorge or at Floras. From Eugene they're almost equidistant, and it sounds like wind at Floras is often just as strong but less gusty, plus you don't have to worry about losing your board in the river current.

Despite what my post above says, I ended up skipping out on riding at Fern Ridge the other day, for concerns about mud and water quality. AE86CRAIG if you live close by - is it as much of a algae infested mud puddle as people make it sound?

On another note I think it would be neat to set up meetups for kiters based in Eugene - I know there are a few who ride Florence/Newport a lot. Kiters can be just as cliquey as anyone else, so it would be neat to start a Eugene clique!

Not bad mouthing any other instructors but if you are in Eugene go to floras and get a Lesson from Andy or any of the Brady clan. All top notch. There you maximize your time on the water!!

Fern ditch is totally safe I've been in it a bunch this summer already jet skiing I have a stand up and get out there when I can with some friends. Alge can be an issue but that's a late summer thing just look for blooms in still water if there are any don't go in but I've never seen any or gotten sick ever. Also I'm not into cliques at all rather just do my thing but I would like to learn soon been working out in Newport for the last 8months staying in a hotel room (I go home on the weekends though) thinking I could be out there having fun this whole time... but I know that I'll need to get to the point that I can ride solo and self launch and rescue to have some fun as my schedule never seems to line up with anyone elses.

struggle in eugene if you like .
Fern ridge will work but will stain your lines with its murk ....but who cares
easier to see in the snow.
Or go to the salt for world class.
Floras is the best place that most of us Eugeneon kiters learned the hard way.
aka lessons what lessons.. 2002-3 style.
Travel all the oregon spots learn as much as u can in various conditions and launches and funky winds .
These are skills you will need to travel to exotic locals safely kiting.
Then when you are good enough try out the world class waves we get up and down most the oregon coast in the spring and fall and the lake in the summer .

I have kited one time this year Shocked down from 100+ at peak Laughing

Building a house this year and working too much as well.
2018 is what I am hoping for .
Pm me if you want ..... we can exchange # s
We tried all the lakes around for years and the mtns..... time is precious go get the good stuff thats known and explore the state meet the great community of kiters and maybe even go to the gorge too Twisted Evil

I wanted to head out of Eugene to hit up either Floras or Jones this weekend, but the forecast isn't looking super promising at this point. Though Temira is currently saying 25-30 for the south coast on Saturday, I don't see that in any other forecasts. Thoughts anyone?
