So I lost my new watch during a foil wipe out yesterday, that's 3 watches in 6 months. I had it on my wrist for the first time as it was warm enough to wear thin gloves, with my thick gloves I had it clipped to my impact vest.
It was a Casio G-shock and I was very happy with it but it was a bit on the expensive side.
I might get the same watch again, but I'm open to cheaper options. Between my Timex Ironman that I had for 15 years and my G-shock I tried my wife's Ironman 50m resistant and it only lasted about an hour on the water so it has to be 100m but I'd rather 200m.
If I do get another G-shock, I would like to get a strap for it that wont fall off and also has strap all the way around so if a pin breaks the strap is still attached and the watch still attached by the other pin. I would also like it to be a longer strap so I can wear it over 10 mm of neoprene.
Anyone have any recommendations for watches or straps?

I had an extra long velcro strap on my 15 year old Timex that worked well for years. But then I got sent through the spin cycle on a head high breaker and it was gone

For a good surf strap design, check out The Band strap from Chisco. They're the original surf watch strap for over 20 years...

Silverfoot offers one too...

The next best option would be a Nato/Zulu type strap. The most secure is a 5-ring version to insure the watch doesn't slide off the strap. 3-ring is more like The Band, so the watch could slide off the strap when it's not being worn.
Note: Most G-Shock watches are spec'ed with a 16mm strap attachment width, so you'll have to cut The Band strap down to 16mm to make it fit. If you go the Nato strap route, you'll need a Nato strap adaptor to make it compatible with a G-Shock, unless you can find a 16mm wide Nato strap. The Nato adaptor is made for 24/22mm wide straps.
Nato straps also come in various lengths. Make sure to get one around 12" so it will work over your wetsuit.

I too have lost a couple of watches the past 13 years kiting. One idea I've never followed through on is to glue a watch and or compass onto the deck of my board.

Replacing the band with a velcro band works best for kitesurfing. It does not fall off and gives you the necessary length to wear over wet suits. However you will absolutely kill the aesthetics of the watch... I have one that I have used for 20 years. It just gets tossed in the trunk and gets pulled out for kite surfing and kayaking.
Velcro watch strap is just about as classy as a velcro wallet....
Though i have not tried it I would consider a cheap waterproof silicon bracelet watch..

I buy the Timex expedition for $21 on Amazon. They last 3-5 years, and have the slimmest profile. Never had a water problem. Eventually, the strap will give out, or the pins fail, and I get a new one. A new strap is almost as much as the new watch.
I have older expeditions on Velcro for thick suit days. They stay in the van with the river ready sunglasses and sun screen.
I have a blinged out counterfeit Rolex for dressing up like an adult.

This watch is super badass but not cheap and if you have dumbass friends like me that leave their watch on the ground while they go kiting you might find one for free haha!!!
