I'm headed to Maui late January and am curious about quiver selection?? I've only been in March and it was 6m heaven but January looks a little less windy. Thank in advance!

Honestly, if it's not 6m or 9m, it's certainly not going to be fun 12m. Sure, you might get a crappy session in down at Maui Sunset in Kihei, but you should probably just go surfing or SUPing instead. I'd take a 6 or 7 and a 9 or 10, and skip the 12. 12m wind on Maui means the winds are probably up and down, and you might be swimming with the sharks.

take your 12. have been on my 12 enough and it was fun. Unless you are like 165 lbs which most seem to be on here a 12 will be plenty of fun for those of us that weigh 215!!!! For me the 6/7 better be blowing 35-40 plus and those days over there are few. I have been on my 9 and it was blowing 35 on the south side and that was fun. different view!! take them all or prepared to be unhappy on the beach!!

I agree - take a big kite ~ 12.
Some of my best days on Maui wave riding on the north shore have been on a 12m kite.
Winter is not very windy for kiting - if there's wind it tends to be light.

The waves are big and the wind can be up and down. Relaunching a 12 meter in waves can be not fun, but if you don't drop it you'll be fine.
Kanaha usually will fire off in Jan., but weather can be less than windy as it is winter.
Probably the best advice is to go see the boys at Hawaiian Island and get some advice on what and where to go.
In general you will be happy at Kanaha Park. You might want to rent a surfboard, straps or not, and that will give you some light wind range.

If it's not blowing the surf is good and you can rent boards, snorkel gear and sup's at Hawaiian Island Surf and Sport across from Kmart.

I have had a lot of great times on Maui with a 12. A lot of people who live there have and use them. Just because you have to use a 12 does not mean that it is shitty.

Just be prepared to surf or kite or hike or fish or swim in a waterfall or eat plate lunch ...

I wouldn't worry. It all depends if trade winds are gonna kick in. Looks windy this winter so far and that is most likely remain to be the trend. Enjoy.
