Mon Dec 07, 15 9:12 pm Turks & Caicos advice / review |
|
|
Hey,
Going to Turks & Caicos at the end of the month and I was hoping I could get some advice from people that have been. I plan on bringing two (maybe three ) kites, a regular TT and lightwind TT. I weigh 195lbs.
I was planning on bringing a 15m, 12m RPM and 9m RPM – I am thinking of maybe leaving the 9m at home. Any recommendations on kite sizes?
Any recommendations for food, stuff to do for the family and night life?
Thank you in advance Last edited by jerp on Mon Jan 25, 16 6:17 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Take all 3 kites - you may not get to the 9 but if you need it and don't have it you'll be pissed. |

I went for 2 weeks in Feb and mostly kited big kites. But there were 2 days on the 8m that I would have hated to miss. |

Here's a thread on TCI from last April with some more info: http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-35561.html&highlight=caicos
I just saw that you asked me in that other thread where we stayed - the house near the beach with the golf carts. Sorry I didn't see it - it's this place: https://www.vrbo.com/421599. There was a nice canadian group in the other house and we all shared the common pool.
Here's some Euro dude's video from there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bedhT5u2ddk
I weigh 180 lbs and bought a 14 just to take there, and the kiting was all 14-17m kites. Some locals said that was unusual, and others said those are the kites you want.
Watching that video reminds me: in the opening seconds you see a palm tree trunk covered with signs to destinations and there wasn't a "Hood River" sign when we were there. So we tried to scounge up some wood and paint but never got around to it. if you go, try to make one in advance and figure out the miles to paint on it too. Represent HR! (If that's where you're from.) Last edited by soona on Tue Dec 08, 15 3:28 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Other tips - the diving as amazing there! there's a huge wall with hammerhead sharks cruising along it, and lots of pelagics, rays and tropical fish to be seen.
Provo is expensive - we rented a cheap house (see the other thread) and sometimes went to the swanky resorts on the north shore for drinks, appetizers or dinners, but it's super expensive.
I hear you can do a bike ride out on North Caicos Island, which might be nice if it's not blowing.
You can road trip out past Da Conch Shack and continuing westward along the north shore for a chance to escape the swanky resort area, and stop and swim along the way.
You can also road trip to Bugaloos fish shack, south of the airport, for a meal and a change of scene.
And there's a casino where I played craps a few nights. |

Thank you everyone for the information. I will bring the 9M if I can squeeze it into the kite bag and for sure bring the 15 and 12.
I’m down in HR this coming weekend. I will grab one of the signs they have in the gift shops especially for placement on that tree
How is whatever temp? I was going to bring a shortie or WS top but I’m thinking not to now. I have a toddler in tow so every item I’m bringing is being scrutinized for space saving reasons |

Pretty sure I did not wear neoprene, just shorts and a rash guard. |

Turks is great. Wind comes predominantly from NE best in am and afternoon. If on Provos long beach is just that a long beach with tons of waist high water on Far East side. If you want waves go to the north of the island. No wet suit needed, def rash guard and hat for the sun. Just got back from area and was fried even though I used spf90 and reapplied every 90mins (and I'm Asian I don't burn easily). Maybe wise to bring booties also; there are conch shells everywhere. Watch out for pricklers seems like all their beach vegetation have sharp pointy seed pods.
Def bring your big kites there is always a small breeze even on light days it's smooth not gusty.
If you are in a pinch contact a guy named Mike Haas from kiteprovos. Super nice guy he rented me a kite a couple of times when my kites bladders blew. |

Yeah there is a ferry that goes to North Caicos. Then you drive to mid Caicos. If you rent a house on mid Caicos it usually comes with a car. Then you can have the car rental agency drop your rental car at the Provincials ferry dock when you return. Check out Mudjin bay. Beer is like $20 for a six pack so drink rum.
On Provincials your wife can go ride a horse, on the beach and in the ocean while you kite board. The kite beach and horse stables are close. |
