Fri Dec 04, 15 8:28 pm December Kiting in the NW Region |
|
|
Hey guys, I'm originally from Chicago (6/5/4 wetsuit etc... Kiting for 3+ years now) and I'm going to be visiting your neck of the woods over the next weekend in Newberg/Portland. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile for me to bring my kite gear. I know that there have been some cold temps there of late. Is it better on the coast than in the gorge? Or should I just prepare to drink a lot of craft beer and peruse the windsport shops while I'm there?
If I were to bring my kite gear, would a 12m and 9m Airush Varial X cover me solidly? I have a Hadlow Wakestyle and boots. Thanks for your advice!

What gman said. This time of year the warmest waters will be the ocean by at least 10 degrees. Kiting on the Columbia will cold and strong east winds at Rooster Rock or Home valley/Stevenson. 9m won't cut useless your NFL linebacker sized.
Southern winter storms come in 2 to 3 hour Windows usually so you have to be patient and you'll get the whole gambit from no wind to super gusts etc etc
This weekend will be mushburger haven (no so clean of waves) and so best to stay in the first couple hundred yards if you go. Actually good luck trying to go farther out... Death wish and probably 99.99% impossible getting past the break.
Northern Coastal forecast:

LEAVE YOUR KITE GEAR AT HOME!
The PNW is not a winter kite destination.
Go with plan B - PDX has amazing beer.

Pack some swim trunks, d-keps pool will be full by next week
Or be the first to bump n jump some 60' ramps (could be a 100' if the wind doesn't knock em down a notch)

Actually John, the park is equipped with this new technology called "drains", & dries out very quickly. Of course, the rain has to actually STOP in order for that to happen, but it never fills up, (just in case you were thinking of showing up with your flippers, snorkel & water-wings...).

Kitesurfing at the Coast this week is looking manly...
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
905 PM PST SAT DEC 5 2015
.MARINE...FIRST...CONFIDENCE IS GROWING THAT THE NEXT SEVERAL
DAYS...THROUGH ABOUT THURSDAY...WILL LIKELY BE THE MOST PROLONGED
STRETCH OF VERY DANGEROUS MARINE CONDITIONS ACROSS OUR WATERS IN
THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS.
A STRONG FRONTAL STORM SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY MOVING WESTWARD ACROSS
THE WATERS AND HAS BROUGHT ONE OF THE MORE EXTENDED PERIODS OF
STORM FORCE WIND GUSTS IN RECENT MEMORY TO THE WATERS. AS A
RESULT...SEAS HAVE BEEN RUNNING BETWEEN 20 AND 30 FT FOR MUCH OF
THE DAY. THIS FRONT IS BEGINNING TO WEAKEN AND SHOULD PUSH ASHORE
TOWARDS MIDNIGHT...BRINGING AN END TO STORM FORCE AND EVEN GALE
FORCE WINDS FOR LATE TONIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING. THIS SHOULD ALLOW
COMBINED SEAS TO RELAX INTO THE 15 TO 18 FT RANGE FOR A PERIOD
CENTERED BETWEEN 5 AM AND 1 PM SUNDAY.
THE NEXT STRONG FRONTAL STORM SYSTEM WILL PUSH SOUTHEASTWARD INTO
THE WATERS SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. MODELS CONTINUE TO WAVER
ON THE EXACT INTENSITY OF THIS SYSTEM...BUT LOW END STORM FORCE
GUSTS OF AT LEAST 50 KT SEEM LIKELY WITH STRONGER SCENARIOS
POSSIBLE. GIVEN SEAS WILL ALREADY BE ELEVATED AND A 20 TO 22 FT
WESTERLY SWELL WILL MOVE INTO THE WATERS CONCURRENTLY WITH THE
STRONG WINDS...SEAS SHOULD PEAK OUT IN THE 30 TO 35 FT RANGE
SUNDAY NIGHT. SEAS SHOULD SUBSIDE BACK BELOW 20 FT SOME TIME
MONDAY...PERHAPS AS LATE AS THE AFTERNOON HOURS AS ANOTHER WAVE
ALONG THE FRONT MAY BRING A SECOND BOUT OF STRONG WINDS LATE
MONDAY OR EARLY TUESDAY.
EITHER WAY...MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST A NEARLY EQUALLY STRONG
FRONTAL STORM SYSTEM WILL DROP SOUTHEASTWARD LATE TUESDAY/EARLY
WEDNESDAY...BRINGING A ROUND OF HIGH END GALE TO LOW END STORM
FORCE WIND GUSTS AND SEAS ABOVE 20 FT.
FINALLY...A FEW MODELS SUGGEST A STRONG SURFACE LOW PRESSURE MAY
MOVE INTO THE WATERS AROUND THURSDAY...WHICH COULD BRING A FINAL
ROUND OF STORM FORCE WINDS AND SEAS ABOVE 20 FT.
HOWEVER...CONFIDENCE IN THE STRONGER SCENARIOS COMING TO FRUITION
REMAIN LOW GIVEN MODEL VARIABILITY AND THIS STORM REMAINS MORE
THAN 5 DAYS AWAY.
