Does anyone have any ideas about eye protection that won't limit your vision on the water? I have tried various sunglasses that were polarised and prevented me from being able to see the surface of the water clearly (they are designed to see THROUGH the water and I don't want that!).

I have also tried swimming goggles, since splash seems to be one of the main problems for me, makes my eyes really red. But they get fogged up.

Any ideas welcome! Thanks, Mikaya

I have been using the Tifosi Tyrant 2.0. I specifically ordered non-polarized lenses, and it comes with 3 lens sets anyway. It is very open so the air flows around it and won't fog up. Better in fresh water as it is not so sticky as salt water so the water will come off much more cleanly.

I use safety glasses that you get at a construction supply store. Specifically, Checklite Cl112 for sun and the gold mirrored "Indoor/outdoor" (Cl119) for overcast skies. Either way, they usually cost me under a $1.50 each so when they get scratched, I just toss em. Just a note - the Cl119 mirrored seem to scratch super quick while floating around in the car. The Cl112's are pretty bombproof and do not scratch very quickly.

I use a small drill bit with a handle to hand drill the earpiece and insert a piece of 1/8 bungee cord into them, making a strap. If the hole is drilled small enough, then the bungee strap is adjustable. If too loose, then it will slip through to the knot. The key is to fray the bungee cord covering so you have something to pull on through the hole with a pair of pliers to get the bungee into the hole.

The secret to any eye wear on occasional immersion sports like kiteboarding, windsurfing, and SUP, is that you will need to manage the sunscreen that gets on them. When you go out with fresh sunscreen on your face, it will coat the glasses each immersion. But the excess sunscreen usually washes off and after about 4-6 immersions, then the glasses stop getting coated. At that time, I come in and pull a little paper towel out of my sand encrusted kite bag on the beach and wipe the glasses off. While I am in, I hydrate a bit more, and then head back out. After the first wipe, you really do not need to wipe again that session.

I keep a pile of these in my gear kit:

Best solution I've tried.

Non polarized.

I buy the yellow/orange safety glasses at Home Depot as well. I use electrical tape to attach a cord. Full ghetto, but works well and they are cheap when scratched or lost.

Safety glasses from Home Depot (Holmes brand black w/ yellow trim). I use heat shrink and small bungees to make the strap. Dip the ends of the bungee in contact cement before using heat shrink to make sure it stays together.

Currently using a plastic polarized sunglasses made by Nike;dark gray lens color. I usually use a little soap and water before each use as my sunscreen always seems to get on the inside portion of my lens. I use a cheap store purchases croakies and attach a string from my wetsuit for added loss protection.

The one thing that I would love to get is some kind of spray to put on the lens to avoid the fogging that transpires when the water and air temp variance is so large.

ANY suggestions?

Also like the Homely and Desperate (Home Depot disposable options. If I ever go that route (highly likely as glasses always seem to get lost, broken or and damaged) I want to get a lens color that is more cheery than gray. I wish I could find the old Vuarnet yellow lens color somewhere.

I also use a baseball hat or sunhat.

Yes split can work. When I go scuba diving, I use toothpaste as it smells good and really helps with the fogging on the inside portion of the mask.

I guess I be adding a small tube of tooth paste in my ancillary gear bag. . .lip balm, sun screen, h20, kite repair tape, rubbing alcohol, knife, extra beer.

I wear cheap polarized shades, "Peppers" brand from REI, and I can see everything fine.

i have silverfish prescription sunglasses...they only get fogged up on the first couple dips, once that clears it's usually fine. Got the adjustable cord on the back to prevent falling off.

I like my cheap polarized UV glasses. See great and don't care if I lose them. Not necessarily designed to see through the water as someone put it but to reduce glare that you get from the water which makes it more pleasant to me.

Anyways, enjoy.

Takes a little time to get them so plan ahead.

Ditto! Been using Barz surf goggles for a few years now after a pair of inverts (eyelids flipping underneath themselves due to face planting while wakeboarding). They look like Riddick's glasses, but they are the best eyeprotection I've ever used. Get them with a script or regular lens. I'd be lost without them now.
