Has anyone been kiting (during the winter months) in Ventura, CA? This January I'm looking to do some kiting in a slightly warmer region of the country. I'm on a student budget (and I've got free lodging near there). Or do you have any better ideas?

I kited my biggest and cleanest waves ever in Ventura in November, but that was probably a coincidence.
Jalama has a much better regular wind for kiting. Went just once to Pismo and did not like the waves, they were closing out all the time.

I lived there for years - now live in pdx

The waves are very good in the winter typically. The wind is decent, with quite a few rideable days of light wind, and a few days here and there of stronger winds that are rideable.

I would rather surf there tho, as some of the best surf on the west coast is within a short drive.

I live here (ventura) now and have for the last 3+ years. The wind in the summer is usually more consistent but there are some days you can ride in the winter.

PM when it gets closer to the trip and I'd be happy to tell you where to go and where the best mexican food is.

I live in Santa Barbara in the winter. Ventura has some windy days in the winter - usually late afternoon. Also check out County Line (Google Neptune's Net restaurant). This is also a good spot for wind and waves. Winter is hit or miss for wind, but the waves are always good. If it's not blowing you can surf or paddlesurf.

C Street is the spot. There is a meter there. Watch the meter, and when it goes, you go!

Watch out for rocks on the inside. Both times I've kited there, I've ripped a fin out.

C Street would be a no brainer, methinks. Surf all morning, get a burrito. If the wind comes up, go kite. If no wind that day, surf again!
