Northshore in HR may be willing to custom make a pad for you to whatever specs you desire.

I want to stress what Niknas said. Go to a doctor who does lots of knees. That is very important for success.

That's funny! I have been smiling since yesterday.
Stringy, Pepi, Cory Roeseler and myself did a practice BOTG blowout when it got postponed yesterday.
I was working the smack out of my 14m and a twin tip when out of the corner of my eye I see Stringy zipping smoothly straight downwind seated with perfect posture. If he would have been sipping a cup of tea with his pinky finger stuck out it wouldn't have looked out of place. That chair foil really could give kiters with bad knees a second chance.

Has your doctor read born to run?
I'm not sure what the extent of your situation is but seriously, running correctly (barefoot) and cycling could be some of the best possible things you can do.

Strapless with a good pad from NSI and a board designed for smoothing out chop. If I recall you ride Slingshot stuff? The 2016 Angry Swallow is very smooth in chop. Make sure every wetsuit you use covers your knees. Really helps. Promotion has a knee covering shorty. I think this has the potential to improve your knee function. And as fun as they look, no strapless airs.

hey nak if you want to give it a spin, let's try it behind your boat. there's very little impact to your lower body only when you crash LOL
anyhow with the chair you can always carry a beer in your on board cupholder!
I was inspired to make this after seeing the guys riding the air chairs. mine is completely strapless though. I like to get away from it if I crash!
made one for matty to help in his recovery and getting him back on the water after a bad ankle break

1. I like Jellyfisher ‘s advice. Total joint replacement is the last resort.
2. Study your exact anatomical defects and adopt kinematics/postures that avoid loading affected areas of the joint.
3. Research Unloader Braces: This company is awesome - http://www.ossur.com/oa-solutions/unloader-braces-and-osteoarthritis/unloader-one-knee-brace
4. Jumping: Yup! I feel your pain. The slow decent of the Naish Pivot sets you down incredibly soft.
5. Directional Surfboard – Strapless yes, but conditionally – using surf wax (sticky) can be a problem.
a. Foot through Femur alignment - Most will do better allowing free heel swing, & torsional/rotational micro-motion between forefoot and board, wide straps allow free heel rotation around the central axis of metatarsal heads. Neutral orientation w/no torsion between tibia and femur (knee defect dependent) let those heels & feet freely align with the axial rotation of the femur.
6. Footwear: Do not insulate proprioception with thick sole foot wear. Split toe booties (thin, 2-3mm) provide enough friction and sensory feedback.
7. Shock absorption: Ultra cushy deck NSI pads work phenomenally well.
a. Full deck pad? - Super cushy NSI pads, ask for Mark's custom design
8. Surf board shapes (chop friendly): Low/little tail rocker narrow rails, Fish shapes
9. Surfboard construction: Polyester resin more elastic than epoxy (North Pacific surfboards).
a. More weight/density is better than those super lights
b. Thin flexible boards, w/thin rails
10. Surf “type” Posture: Allows grater range of motion recruiting more joints of the skeletal chain.
a. Front foot loading farther forward (athletic lunge stance) w/neutral rotations tibia & femur, pelvis rotated/(belly button) facing direction of travel (neutral femur acetabulum rotation). Can be applied to wake boards if you rotate heel where toes point to direction of travel (AKA surfboard stance)
b. Sliding hook facilitates this
11. Asymmetric foot forward preference: unaffected leg forward for the majority of the harsh riding, affected leg forward only for lighter cruising. View powder & Slalom snow board videos not the free style duck foot snowboard/wakeboard stance.
a. I’ve noticed my older windsurfer buddies getting total hip resurfacing. I suspect the fixed/poor posture where the pelvis is fixed parallel to the direction of travel. This causes high fatigue in that short range of motion. Sliding hook allows maximum range of motion among the skeletal chain around the athlete’s axial core.

To add to this, I was shitting myself over how much faster String was on his Sit-Down Foil going from Stevenson to HomeValley. I was feeling kinda cocky fast at the start, but he literally blew by me, sitting, literally sitting, while I was looping and zipping my kite to get more speed.
Silly fast, he is, silly fast......

I think the skyski will work great!
I've seen guys riding these in baja.
actually the innovator behind the skyski is also a kiter!

I buckled my knee (bent backwards) in 2011.
I never fully recovered.
2 years earlier I had mis- landed hard on an off the lip floater and tore my hip flexors.
Many years of recovery on that one.
It prompted me to pick up the pace on a project.....a memory foam core surfboard.
Soft, light, silent when you ride, and high performance.
Hit it with a hammer and the dent just comes out over 5 minutes.
FCS fins (thruster set up) which are best ridden as a twin in flat water....tri in the surf.
I wear a brace when I kite---but I have not had to wear my brace when riding this board. My knee and hip have never been happier.
And the board is SO fun to ride.
They are all handmade and laid up in San Clemente CA.
PM me if you have questions.
