Can anyone recommend some camping near Rufus? Thinking of heading there for a few days and would like to know a good spot.

Car/RV camp right at the launch spot or commercial cg across the interstate in Rufus (never stayed there or checked out so can't comment). And, of course, there's always Maryhill SP - very nice!

I think you can stay at Rufus for free on the gravelly beach for 14 days for free.

Yep you can camp right at Rufus. Its primitive but it works great if you are self contained in a car or RV. I've heard people have used tents there but honestly I don't think its ideal.

Maryhill is a very VERY nice campground just a few miles away on the Washington side.

Another option is Le Page Park, just east of Rufus on the Oregon side. I've never camped there, but pulled in and looked around... nice spot, right on the John Day River, and potentially wind sheltered.

You're coming into the period of the amazing peach harvest time. I know this is jack to do with kiteboarding. But one day a long time ago I had a "walk of shame" through the peach forests around late July. Came out of there just coated with sugary peach heaven and a big grin.

Rufus is good if you're sleeping in a van or rv.
Rufus has no facilities except for 2 toilets. No running water. No grass, no trees. Just gravel and dirt.

Maryhill is a proper campground on the Washington side with grass and trees and a nice beach - 5 minutes from Rufus.

If the free camping on the Rock pile doesn't suit you, you might also check out the campground at the mouth of the Deschuttes.
