Wed Jun 17, 15 7:06 pm Visiting PDX June 26 - 30. |

I am heading up to Portland next week and am looking for good spots to ride. I regularly ride in the SF Bay area, but this will be my first time to ride in Oregon. I have been riding for a couple seasons, and am comfortabe riding on my own, but going pwind can be ht or moss for me.
Looking on the nw wind website, I am considering Jones Beach and/or Sunset Beach due to hopefully less crowded conditions and downwinder potential.
Are there any other spots I should check out? How about any special rules, guidelines, safety issues etc. beyond the descriptions elsewhere on the site I should be aware of?
Any input is appreciated! |

Hey OK,
You'll find things are easy going up here. Only the Gorge can get crowded at the big launches in HR but nothing you're probably not used to. Our coast can be cold and munchy so if you're partial to flat water the Gorge and Jones are for you. Sauvie Island is closest to PDX and blows if it's hot and Northerly.
Enjoy! |

Check Temiras forecast blog Thegorgeismygym. You shouldn't have trouble staying upwind with the current helping and stronger winds than the Bay. The Event Site Sandbar likely won't be too crowded on weekdays |

You need to pick your spot based on the wind/weather conditions each day so Temira's forecast is a good start. If it's cloudy and cool on the coast and at Jones, then the Gorge should be windy. If Hood River is hot and windless, then the coast is usually on. When the heat wave breaks, there is usually good wind at Jones a day before it returns to Hood River. You shouldn't have any issues staying upwind with the current in the Gorge as long as you are powered and it isn't blowing out of the east.
When you get to the beach, feel free to ask the locals for tips and advice. |

Don't listen. . . What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Stevenson is beautiful, rugged mountains, green and lined with Douglas Fir trees, and the wind is some of the steadiest/smoothest in the gorge. However, the water is mostly chops with some flats sometimes by the shores. People who ride there usually are locals and regulars and are friendly.
The launch is like an aircraft carrier. One in or one out at a time. When it is crowded and people are waiting, best and better to have your ducks in a row and properly rigged. The launch is also rocky land requires someone to launch and land you (unless of course you try a drift launch or dump your kites on the water for a landing). |
