Here's what's lurking just under the super-size-swell. Caught this one on Sunday, 6/14/15 just upriver from the HR Bridge. The resident 6 year old's eyes nearly popped out of his head when it surfaced. It was approximately 9' and 300+ ibs. Here's the video;

Hey
Nice catch!
Might be a silly question but I'm not from around these parts, what did you do with the sturgeon? Catch and release?
Thanks
John

I'm not a sturgeon fisherman (I fly fish mainly on the Deschutes) and so I don't know the exact rules, but a fish like that/that big is considered breeding stock. That fish might 80+ years old.
There is a range you can keep them... Something like 36" to 60".

1) tow to shore
2) start chainsaw and cut fillets. Just kidding.
There's only a few days a year that you can keep a sturgeon, but it must be within a certain length range, and can only keep 1 or 2/year. The biggies all are required to be let-go. It appears that most of the oversize sturgeon float on their back with their white underside exposed upward once they're landed. They look like a giant stone age stoned fish. This biggie was just fine once the hook was taken out with pliers. It flipped over and swam back down immediately.

Thanks for the reply. That's kind of what I thought. I fish as well, never caught nothing like that though. I figured something that big and old would be released.

Very cool!
On this topic, the sea lions are starting to feed on the big sturgeon. I have a video of one killing a 6 foot plus sturgeon in May near Camas. According to another boater, it was his second one that day. Sturgeon have no defense against these predators. If the sea lions continue to prey on these fish, the breeding stock of sturgeon in the Columbia river won't last long.
The sea lion actually charged my boat. It was VERY aggressive. I'd hate to be on a SUP unknowingly paddling over a feeding sea lion...

Aggressive, yes! I was kiting lot b on Monday and was scolded/barked at by about a dozen of them for taking their wave/waves:-). They were either hunting and or surfing in the waves. Whales were out too!
