It was great. I was on a 9m and twintip, fully powered.
I love Manzanita - but when the wind is up, I love Ft Stevens more...

Anyone up at Ft. Stevens today? It looked socked in all day. I got spanked on my 6.5 at Manzanita with some really large tight shore break waves.
I left about 2:30 and headed north but, when I got to the cut off for Portland, the clouds were stuck against the mountains and the readings were in the low teens so, I didn't bother.
That was a lot of driving for an hour and a half of ass wuppin.

Chris,
I played redneck for a little while this morning and played in the sand at Sand Lake with my friends in their 4x4s. It was sunny and windy there. I had planned on going to my usual coastal spot (you know where that is) and along the way I ran into thick fog. Suddenly when I approached said location the fog cleared and I misjudged the wind and put up my 9m. After about 20 minutes of tea bagging I headed in and got my 6m Ahhh! Such Perfection!

Solid 10-12M, fog broke at about 2PM and the show was on!!
It was awesome meeting everyone!!
And thanks for keeping an eye on the kook with the big red kite (me).
Perfect day to pop my down-winder wave cherry.....twice even!

I made the same decision. I wanted to kite shipwreck - but chickened out because my largest kite is a 12 and I have been skunked a couple times on the north coast. So I went for the for sure wind at Manzo. I was doing "OK" on my 6 meter for about an hour - then I was getting worked by the conditions. Wind had me on edge, waves were not playing nice. And to top it off - body dragging for my surf board and the board decided to catch a wave and found my head..................

Funny thing is that I was trying on helmets the weekend before thinking that with all my recent strapless riding I was kiting on borrowed time without a helmet. Guess I jinxed myself

In the last few months taking on bigger waves I learned some very important things. I told myself never ever drag out to your board in big surf. after 4 or 5 times of never making it to the board on time, and now the board is now flying at me at 20mph and wizzes past my face. It always hunts you down. Im body dragging in for a while then I'll hunt it down.

Blaze, I am glad you are OK.
Please everyone, take safety advice from surfer, Blaze, and others seriously.
Warning, graphic material.
Last year during the KB4C event many of you participated in a very cool memorial tribute using our kites in a “missing man formation” for our kite buddy Glenn who died from a similar accident in 2013. Details: Glenn was kiting in strong wind and small swell when he lost his board. The board floated up from behind and bumped him in the head. This sort of thing has kinda happened to all of us as the nature of kiting has us looking downwind while holding the bar with 2 hands, when the surfboard catches a small swell or piece of chop and glides into the back of our head. The bump on his head was not big enough to cause an emergency. However, a few days later, the internal bleeding in his skull caused him to pass out while driving and he hit a tree.
Strapless boards tend to get away from us easier. Surfboards have nose rocker that aim for our heads while are hands are holding onto the kite bar. Unlike normal surfing where you search for your board by swimming with your hands in front, instinctively protecting our heads.
Kite safe, have FUN.

Thanks for the warning Luke. I normally keep an eye on the board if I know it is close. But it was one of those long sliding crashes and I was no where near my board. I was body dragging away from the board towards shore to gain some upwind ground. A small wave went over me from behind and my board found me. It didn't hit me hard. The fins just caught the top of my head at a pretty good speed, and my board was now in front of me racing me to the beach. It barely even hurt. A few minutes later - I noticed it kind of stinging. Put my hand on my head and realized it was covered in blood. Even the smallest cuts on the head seem to bleed a lot initially. I had an ER doc friend take a look. He just warned me of symptoms to watch for and said that I would probably be fine after some rest.
