I posted in the other thread but there was a typo and it got locked before I could edit it. I meant to say, those that DON'T ride at the coast all the time probably don't have any idea what the hell your talking about. I.E. as much as someone that just showed up at the sand bar would have a hard time figuring out that there was a rotation of riders cycling through the kiddie pool, I think many people can't see what is going on in the ocean or what the proper etiquette is.
I surfed long enough to learn that it wasn't for me so I lack the whole "line up etiquette" thing. Hell, if I paddled out I probably couldn't tell you which was the front and which was the back of the line up.
Anywho, the point of this thread is for some of the coasties to explain how its "supposed" to work. I've got a fairly good idea about the phenomenon your talking about but perhaps you could clarify a little further. I could see how it could get fairly dangerous pretty damn quick when some kook is blocking your escape route.
The point is to inform those that don't know or know very little (including myself) what to be looking out for. It's not about being territorial or telling someone their lame, its about informing them of "how it works" out there. |

Here's some tips not to agitate the Meth-Heads.
1. Give way to folks on a wave or about to turn down the line. It's not boat racing "STARBOARD" rules in the waves.
2. Don't show up and try to bum rides all day. You can get YOUR car sandy and salty like everyone else.
3. Don't show up with a twin-tip and an 11m as your big kite and complain that the wind sucks.
4. Don't wear steeze and "cuddle-huddle" (mainly a Norby thing)
5. If you're not "down-the-line" kiting yet, don't go to where the best waves are and clog things up. E.G. Go for the Gearhart - Sunset - Iredale stretch which is more convenient anyway.
6. When asking someone to catch your kite, quickly jog up and take it from them. Don't expect them to dig up a bunch of sand and balast it for you. (goes for any location)
7. When participating in down winders - get it together. Nobody wants to wait for you. The best time to get organized and make repairs is when the wind isn't blowing.
8. Pack a cooler. Meth heads are thirsty.

Great post Monkey and thanks for the link G and the Slither List. I never comment on coastal events because I'm too focused on staying alive and not trying to be kooky. |

It's like riding anywhere else.
Stay the f out of other peoples way.
If a rider is comming in, dont COCK BLOCK them.
The ocean is HUGE and there is tons of space for everybody, no need to snake a wave when thier is another one 8 to 10 sec later.
I recommend riding with short lines for a more agressive session.
Now go out and smack a lip. |

For the most part it is the responsiblility of the rider heading out the keep the hell away from the wave rider. It requires alot of concentration and focus the ride downwind rights in north wind conditions. I find it very annoying when I have to break from focusing on the wave to watch out for someone headed out on their starboard tack.
Also, remember the waverider is burning up huge distance downwind when riding rights and unless you are WAY downwind don't try to sneak out below the waverider. It is better to keep your kite high and try to pinch upwind above the guy riding the wave as not to interfere with his downwind track. Or another route is to turn around and head back towards the beach for a few seconds to avoid crossing paths.
If no one is riding waves, then it goes back to sailing rules of starboard tack has priority.

One common misunderstanding - if the wind is from the North (the predominant direction on the coast in summer) - are people catching a wave and sailing upwind - fine as long as no one else is around or setting up to bomb downwind down the line
Its a good idea to yeild to the rider coming downwind - down the line (I've had a guy hit his head to his forward - like I could of had a V8 - when I told him nicely I had priority - why yes he should of known that - so we waxed his windshield and set his car on fire) _________________ Go Deep!

When I'm in the Ocean I try to stay away from everybody. There are some guys who like to stay in one spot, and usually it's the sweet spot. Like twin fin said, the ocean is big.
