Free Gorge Safety Clinic 10:00 am Saturday May 2 at the Event Site

Topics include upwind bodysurfing, board recovery, and self-rescue in The Gorge.

We will start with a class room discussion on the east end of the grass and then head out to the end of the sandbar to work in the water.

Kiteboarders of all levels are welcome to join us for a part of the clinic or all of it.

Please spread the word.

This is an incredible and generous offer from Mark (redbeard)!

I learned from Mark back in 2009. He's one of the best!

If you wear a leash on your board - take this free clinic and learn the proper techniques so you can unshackle yourself from your board....

If you find yourself losing your board and are at the mercy of others to fetch it for you - take this clinic.

Mark has been around forever. Well maybe not forever, but he was there with his kiteboarding school back when I started in 2003. He was always positive, helpful and giving with his advice. For you newbies and kooks, I'd take him up on his offer. Heck, I might even go; I'm sure it wouldn't hurt (I fall into the kook category somewhere Wink ).

Bottom line he is a real class act!

Thanks for the support.

Here are the details for jerp:

Free Gorge Kiteboard Safety Clinic
Hood River -- Saturday May 2nd 10:00 am -1:00 pm

Kiteboarders of all levels are welcome to join us for a part of the clinic or all of it.

First part of the clinic on the east end of the grass at the event site:
You might want a wind proof coat, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat with brim, lawn chair, cup of hot coffee/tea, and an open mind.

Topics include:
Overall safety/navigation rules/courtesy
Launching /landing
Board recovery/upwind bodysurfing
Self-rescue
--------------------------------------------------
Second part of the clinic on the sand bar:
If you are going to get wet, you need to put on your wetsuit, booties, harness.
(No need for an open mind here, reality is hard to argue with)

1) Launching / landing
Dry land, no wet suit needed. Helmet is required if operating kite.

2) The self-rescue
I will be demonstrating near shore and you can watch from dry land or participate.

3) Bodysurfing up wind.
Students can watch from dry land or get wet and learn the skill fast.
----------------------------

I will have a kite to work with in the water for students that have the skills to control the kite but do not want to rig their own kite. Students using my kite must bring a helmet and flotation vest.

If you are not just starting, you might find it handy to have a board and kite when you get out of the clinic, so you can go kiting. The cold water encourages fully powered bodysurfing that keeps your neck out of the water and moves you back to the board fast. So now is a good time to kite.

"Torpedo type body dragging" has sparked my interest. I may have to make the drive.

I'm a little late on the post-clinic review, but I sent a bunch of friends who are newer at kiting or interested to the clinic and they benefited greatly from it. Thanks to Mark for the generosity and the proactive approach to the safety of the community.
