Yup, the Holy Grail (7.3 and SMB 4x4 conversion). I did a ton of mods to it (redid all the shock mounts so I could run custom valved Bilsteins, re worked the springs, and a host of other stuff). The trouble shown above in Baja was not the rig's fault. It had a tuner designed for pickups, not the vans (a number of differences between the two, so it gave bogus readings and put it into limp mode). Pulled it all out there and problem solved. We'd still have it, but we out grew it (fam of four).

The guy with the look of disgust in the pic was also in his Sportsmobile (we were traveling together). He had the 6.0. He emailed recently and the 6.0 let go (horrible engine).

Nice. I went with the V10 to avoid all of the diesel variables.
Here's a photo of it more in it's element.

I know.. I know... the original post was to see the "inside" of kiteboarding vehicles.. I started with a VW Touareg that I'd load with every kite from 5m to 17m, boards, buggy then pack misc gear around it. -uuugh
In the summers I give up a cheap small studio apartment in Alaska and spend summers with you all in the Gorge. So I upgraded my kiteboarding vehicle to a Travel Trailer and a truck to pull it. Everything fits in the front pass through storage compartment of the trailer and it has more room than my apartment up here.

OG, it's a '61 Airstream Safari 22' and right now with nothing in it, it's pretty light. When I got it I towed in to the dump and tore 1000lbs of rotten crap out of it. Then I pulled out some more heavy things like rusted out heaters, water heaters, tanks, etc. The original axle was rated at 5000lbs and I replaced it with a 6500.
My last trailer was a older 17' and I pulled it with my V6 Explorer just fine. Really only noticed the weight on the longest steepest hills. They say to add around 1000lbs when loaded for a trip...assuming water tanks etc.
The pics on this thread are KILLING ME!

This is my new rig & I'm stoked!!
If you can't fly, then run.
If you can't run, then walk.
If you can't walk, then crawl.
But whatever you do, keep kiteboarding!

We grew out of it, sold it last year to a brewery in Salem. With the two of us it was fine but now with 2 kids it just didn't have enough space. Also its hard to replace all the convenience of a full RV (bathroom, shower, kitchen, etc.)
The Axis actually feels a lot like driving a large van, its only 25' which is around 5' longer than my truck. You can pull into a parking lot and not get stuck. But it also has storage comparable to a full size RV.
The biggest selling point for us was the 8000lbs towing capacity, which will let us take our boat on trips with us. Most RV's that aren't big diesel pushers have 5000 capacity at the most.
Will always have fond memories of the Ambo though!
