Looks like cold weather this week and warming for the weekend.
Any idea if Soldier mountain has enough snow for snow kiting?

I joined the Snow kite Idaho Yahoo group and there have been several emails flying around that conditions have been very good. To quote the update send on Sunday:

"Camas was the best it's been in 3 years. Soft snow, good coverage and some good wind early before it died off."

They are saying the wind forecast for the next week is not looking good though.

Ha! That's my quote!

The snow was very good last week but the winds have been calm this week unfortunately. At least it looks like it will be a good year and we just need some wind!

Does anyone know if soldier mountain is still looking into opening some terrain for snowkiting? I know they talked about it last year. Might be a good option for when there is little wind in the valley.

Very unlikely from what I've heard. The community was gifted the resort from Bruce Willis and is being run as a 501c3 non-profit with barely enough funds to keep the lifts spinning.

But, if you know the terrain and are comfortable with snowkiting with mountain exposure there is plenty of action to be had on the frontside (Peak 1) and the backside (Smoky Dome). They also have Snowcat skiing, a rental Yurt ($300/night) and one-way tow-in's via sled/snowcat.

Best bet if you're new to the Camas or snowkiting in the Mtn's is to Park & Ride at one of the main spots just to be on the safe & alive side. Smile

I am down.

I was thinking of heading out this weekend but it doesn't look like there would be any wind.

Is there enough snow for a run to Camas? Looks like it from the road cams. Also, does anyone care to share their favorite wind forecast site for the Camas area. I've been following the Fairfield, Id, weather reports that have not shown much wind. Has it really been sucking that bad?

Cheers!

February is almost here. I want to head back to Utah or Idaho for some snowkiting.

Are you making any plans yet?
