Wed Aug 25, 10 12:44 pm New CGKA launch site.... Bingen! Come check it out. |
|
|
Cleanup postponed due to Lyle fire. Fire crews have setup camp on grass. Stay tuned for new date.
Good news!!
The Bingen port has given us the green light to add the "Bingen Kiteboard site" to our list. This will be a Advanced launchsite due to the single access point of takeoff/return. For those of you that haven't been down there yet, it's a wonderful open grassy top launch (think Stevenson) with lots of parking. Works well on windy days. I would like to have a quick (couple hour) cleanup on Sat at 9am. Would mean moving some rocks from launch site, some blackberries from the bank, and some weeds from the water. We would also make a rough path down to the water. We are working on the Port coming down with a backhoe and putting in a permanent path in the fall.
If you know of someone with a boat or jetski please bring it with some rope.(60') We can try to drag out the weeds to open water. Please also bring gloves, shovels, swim suit.
Please help spread the word.

Wow. That is awesome Mark.
I can't make it this weekend due to Hood to Coast, but I plan on checking it out ASAP.

Awesome!
I used to windsurf there but don't remember what wind direction was best for Bingen? Also I think I remember it being a notch lower than Hood. So would be a good spot when its blowing like crazy at the sand spit.

Monkey,
Thanks for the help. There is only one semi dead blackberry to go. If you have tools please bring them. There are also some bushes to cut back.
Here are some pics of the new site.

Something to consider would be the pruning of trees upwind of the optimal launch site. The tree windshadow is one of the factors why the bingen marina is underused.

Westerlies to northerlies blow there from what I remember and I've sailed in thermals there (yawn) when it wasn't blowing in Hood River. There is also a fish net there sometimes. Erosion of the banks is something to be cautious about, and the rare fish hook in the silt.
If you work at Insitu make sure your boss doesn't recognize what kite you fly...
Oh, and no threads allowed bitching about dogs there! They were there first (watch where you walk by the way).

Sounds good. If there is only a single plant then we should cut it at the base and apply 75% glyphosate solution to the stump (just dab it on).
Does anyone know if those bushes in the photo are the invasive false indigo bush? (i.e. they have the small pinnate leaves that are opposite each other like the bushes at stevenson). They kind of look like false indigo but they could be young salix lasiandra.
If they are false indigo then we should be prepared dig dig them up. Does anyone by chance have one of those nifty root lever thing-a-ma-jigs? They look like this, but soe are much simpler... ...http://www.pullerbear.com/
Or we could use straps and a truck.
Looking forward to the new launch!!

Where is it on the map? East end? Or more in front of Insitu?

At east end. Facing directly at Big rock.
