Crazy Stuff!!
The North Atlantic: A mythical Route !
This ocean crossing will be launched in New-York in June 2006 and the official arrival point is set as a line drawn from Ouessant to Lizard in Brittany
Anne hopes to complete the 2800 Nautical mile crossing (approximately 5000 kms) that separate the two continents in 5 to 6 weeks. This is a challenging crossing on an arduous route. Even in summer, it can reserve unpleasant surprises. The North Atlantic spares no one.
Even though the prevailing winds are from the West, they are not as regular as the Tradewinds.
Blown by weather Lows, and Tropical storms or on the contrary, by an unwanted anti-cyclonic East wind the North Atlantic plays no favors to anyone, host to cumbersome cargo ships and threatening icebergs. This route, although mythical, is far from being a cakewalk!
The Gulfstream is a precious ally but, it can be treacherous.
This huge permanent and warm ocean current, originates in the Gulf of Mexico, winding its way between Cuba and the Florida panhandle. This is its widest point (about 80 km ). It plunges to a depth of over 640 metres , running at an incredible speed of 100/150 km per day, displacing about 85 million cubic metres of water per second. It's temperature ranges between 30 - 35 ° C.
The Gulfstream hugs the Florida coastline until it reaches Cape Hatteras in North Carolina USA. At this point it changes direction, heading North West , in other words heading to the Atlantic interior. After it's contact with the Labrador current, the Gulfstream cools off, slowing down considerably to about 8 km per day, while the temperature drops to about 25° C.
As it reaches the coastline of Europe, it splits into two branches, one heading to Iceland and the other, to the Azores .

Thanks, Adrian - You got it! After I rode PKH's first Hein board, I was hooked and hopefully it''ll last for life.
We're trying to plan a trip to Playa/ Cozumel for diving and kiting - Is it crazy and overrun with tourists around Christmas? How are the conditions in Dec/ Jan? Thanks, Tonya
