In case you missed it, Oregon Field Guide did a story on Nelscott Reef. Pretty sweet:

The local tow-in crew doesn't get the credit they deserve. Come over when its 15-ft. and east winds and you'll see them out. Not competing, or being photographed, but just ripping huge surf. The local teams are quickly becoming contenders.

March and early N winds could present kiteable conditions on the reef, although it would be nice to have jetski backup!

Isn't the problem with big wave kiting that you just start going too fast for the kite at some point? The footage I've seen was more about proving that you can escape the wave than getting a good ride on it. Plus you'd probably need jet ski support as you mentioned. At that point it seems like you're better off just tow in surfing.

Props to everyone ripping out there.

Nice coverage of Nelscott. Oregon Field Guide has featured some pretty cool stuff.

I heard the only reason there is waves at the coast is due to global warming..... Wink

Winter wave heights have seen an unprecedented increase in recent years. Here's a paper by my geomorphologist friend and neighbor Jonathan Allan.

genek's probably right, the kite probably just becomes a hindrance at a certain wave size, especially if its blowing side to side-off. Look at Ben Wilson ditching his kite to go for the barrel. Don't you wish you could afford to do that?

Nothing new for Oregon. The Billabong XXL came out a few years ago looking for surf. It's cool that the big names in surfing came out though, good stuff for sure

The contest is holding at yellow right now (tracking swell). Here is a link. You can sign up and they will send you an email when they go to Green. Then the contest is 48 hours away.

THat place sucks
never any dependable wind

at most surf locales

would be fun to rip around on that big boy

without the gas burner.

are you kidding?
instead of bouncing around,,, big ole surfboard---

You could be puttin a edge to it ,,rockin kite-surfboard,,
The bigger the wave the more area to rip around on.
yesterday was the shizz
nice warm south west swell doh
just me and the surfys
