This year there is a lack logs at the place I want to Kitesurf. Does anybody have a recommendation for a sand anchor? Where to buy? One of the reasons for this request is that I need to stay away from the snow plover nests.

Thank

Anthony

Ozone makes a decent sand anchor but it's hard for me to trust them knowing they come out so easily in sand. Can't have your kite come up from 9 at all or else risk the thing go flying with your kite. Shit happens - speaking from personal experience. I've had the most success with bringing out a small boulder and hooking a leash around it or an old used tire with some sand inside it.

Earth Anchors.

You can get different lengths. You can even place two in series if you are really concerned in high wind conditions.

Coastal usually keeps an array of lengths in stock.

These are designed to hold a ton of weight. Much better holding power than simple screw type anchors (the ones designed like a cork screw).

I wouldn't recommend for any surfaces other than sand however as they would be tough to penetrate the ground.

You will want a metal bar to screw them in. Perhaps a 1 - 2' piece of rebar. Simply place the bar in the keyhole and twist.

Reminds me of a story back a few years ago.

A buddy of mine had a new sand anchor he wanted to use. I recall offering to launch him but he wanted to use his new anchor. I get it, gives him the flexibility to come and go at will.

He set up a bit up wind of me.

All of a sudden I see his kite out in the water ahead of me. His screw anchor had popped out.

I go running after his kite in the shallow water and am about 15' from his bar when a sea lion pops out of the water directly between me and his kite. Stopped me dead in my tracks. The Sea Lion turns to me and barks loudly at me making sure I know that he is in control.

I completely stop until the seal lion is out of the way. Then I continue on to secure my buddies kite.

ahh good times

😂 You are a fearless man and even better friend for grabbing your friends kite. Several years back, we didn't have any anchors or fixed objects at the beach i was kiting. So i brought a giant military duffle and filled it with sand as an anchor.

It worked great until i made the mistake of putting my kite at 11 while the chicken loop was on the caribeaner and my leash wasn't attached, like a total noob. Next thing i know the giant duffle (filled with sand) is levitating while it's between my legs as I'm holding the bar unhooked. So me and the duffle go up about 8 feet, i fall off the duffle, as I'm falling, by a miracle i hook my leash onto the safety ring, which then flags out the kite, and i land on my face. Otherwise the kite would have started flying away with a levitating sand bag, kind of like a hot air balloon. Shit happens 🤪. Always always always keep your kite at 9/3 when anchor launch/landing

Kite with a buddy, especially in the ocean....if you feel you must, there are better ways to self launch other than using an anchor or sandbag tho!

I am not a fan of these ground screws for self launching. If they come out the kite goes tumbling down the beach with a sharp projectile attached to the bar (don't ask me how I know!). For teathered launches nylon runners around fixed objects are best with sandbags a distant second.

...you need skills!!!

If you are going to:

-Break laws and give a big FU to your fellow citizens

-Drive from Salem to kite in the ocean solo

-Strive to not be a kook

Then you should know more than one way to launch & land your kite.

What are you gonna do if the wind ramps up while you’re on the water and you can’t get to your doggie-stake-bullshit-anchor? Stand on the beach with your kite in the air till dark and hope the wind lets up?

Here’s just one of a multitude of ways. Learn them all, as there’s a time and a place for everything (although you've already demonstrated that you don’t understand that fine point). Ain’t gonna find any driftwood anchors in Tahiti, brah.
