I am planning a trip to Maui to pop my island shred cherry. From what I understand the best time to go is late October into November. I'm looking for any helpful hints, recomendations, or advice. What side of the island is best for what, transportation, etc.

Cody.
Yeah - October and November are best time for wind and waves.
I'll be there in November. Jason from Big Winds is also going and could be someone to share a place with.
Older people and families with money stay on the south or west side of the island (Kihei, Lahaina).
Rich people stay on the West side or North shore (Sprekelsville).
Cool surfers/kiters like you stay in Paia or upcountry in Haiku and Makawao.
For housing try Airbnb or vrbo.com. There's a hostel in Paia.
No matter where you stay - you'll need a car.
For car rental contact Frankie - info@mauicarrental.biz. He has small wagons that are cheap and good.
Also try Manaloha car rental - info@manaloharentacar.net
All kiting takes place on North Shore near the airport (kite beach, baby beach).
Some people kite in Kihei but's not a great place for good wind or waves.
Best snorkeling is Kihei and Lahaina.
Shortboard surfing is North shore - Hookipa.
Longboard and SUP surfing is west side.
Many shops near the airport rent snorkel gear, sups, and surfboards pretty cheap.

And don't forget that several of the kite shops rent kiteboards too. I like using Action Sports because they have a van right on kite beach. I will normally get a weekly rental and that allows me to grab any board or directional they have in the van. Being right there makes it easy to swap out. |
