I sailed on the coast Monday and Tues (Manzo). On Monday night I noticed a strange event, SI blew but lot B did not. How was it?
Last night both lot b and SI blew. How was it last night? Have not sailed SI for years. |

SI started off really light about 5pm tues nite, and just barely kiteable but perfect direction and fan-like.
By about 6:30 it was amazing. If you looked at it, you would have doubted it was even kitable, but less than a dozen of us were powered up in the smoothest, most consistent wind I've seen anywhere other than the coast.
Drew just moved into a place located on SI, so now he's got a 10 minute commute to the kite beach.
Since he's the only real "local" that kites there, we can blame him when it sucks or if our tires get slashed

What sort of strength was the wind? I've never been to SI, and I have no idea what sort of adjustment would need to be applied to the iKitesurf sensor to approximate the actual conditions there. Looking at the data for that sensor on Tuesday, the average wind speed never got above about 10 knots, and the gusts peaked out around 14.
Any sort of rule of thumb to interpret the sensor data? What size kites were people on? |

None of the sensors for SI are really usable. The ikitesurf and NOAA sensors are both behind trees relative to a north wind.
This NOAA St. Helens sensor (and the Scappoose sensor) are probably the most accurate, but both are quite a few miles away:

"Amazing" was really in regards to the smooth/consistent quality of the wind, perfect direction, and flat water. Speeds were probably mid-teens after 6:30-ish. This is SI we're talking about, not some nice venturi like the gorge or jones.

| The kalama -woodland corridor was also ridable yesterday until late afternoon. I've noticed that SI usually goes off in the evening when this midday blow goes off in the kal/woodland area. I'm still trying to figure out a more direct correlation. The closest thing might be the Olympia-Portland pressure gradient(?). It was like 0.07 yesterday. |

It's behind trees relative to a north wind. It was a dumbass place to put a wind sensor IMO. I'll point it out to you if you ask me at the beach sometime.

Considering that it is 0.20 miles from the sensor instruments to the nearest possible tree, I am wondering about your opinion here FlyDunes. Even if the wind is blowing true north and over the top of those low trees on the southwest side of Bachelor Island, it still has over 1000 unobstructed feet to reattach to the water's surface before hitting the anemometer. |

Hey Stu, that guy: flying dunes is at Si all the time. Put in a few seasons slogging out there and you'll know what works and what does not. 503-543-6401 is the Scappoose Airpark and is the best indication of what is going on out there aside from an onsite report. The trees on the Ridgefield side block some of the North winds. But u would have to sail a bunch there to know this...At the same time, the clearing by those trees provide some great riding conditions if u get up there. |

Like I said, come out to the island and let me point out the sensor to you, and then you can tell me if its in the lee of the trees or not.
Do you work for iKitesurf? The channel marker on the Oregon side and closer to the kite beach would be an ideal place to relocate the sensor from a position standpoint.

Yes FlyDunes - I put the sensor in and have visited it for repairs on a number of occasions. If there is a better USCG navaid location, I am definitely interested.
I was simply making sure that people understood this sensor is out on the river - you have to agree that "behind trees" is slightly vague considering they are located over 1000ft away.
